I am going to have an orthodontic evaluation to see exactly what they need to do braces-wise. Should I do anything between now and then? What should I expect at this appointment? How long after the evaluation do they put braces on? My little brother had braces a while back, (his teeth were really bad) but I don't really remember what he went through (I wasn't paying a lot of attention I guess, plus I was getting ready to start college)

In response to riche-bronson, the evaluation is 40 if they have to take x-rays, 27 if not. I am going to compare the price they quote me with what it cost my brother to get braces. Mine shouldn't be as much as his becuase his teeth were MUCH worse. If the price is a little high, I will go somewhere else to get a eval, but there is only one ortho in my town, so the hour drive to the next ortho might make up the price difference.

In response to tomh311, thanks for the info, although I've pretty much got the "spouse hunting" part done with. ;)

In response to Nebula D, I don't care about how much the evaluation costs, I was just mentioning what they told me when I made my appointment. They just said that IF I have to have a pan. x-ray, it will cost 40 as opposed to 27, which doesn't really matter to me all that much. By the way, our insurance covered 1/2 of my brothers braces, but I have heard that insurance doesn't cover you if you are over 18. Is this true, or does it just depend on if you are a dependent of your parents. (I am 20, but still in college, so I am still their dependent and covered under their insurance)

don't show up there with funky teeth and gums. they won't put braces on if you're gums bleed. you'll get a panoramic xray and maybe some impressions done.

the price is rarely affected by the complexity of the case unless it's extremely easy or extremely difficult. most cases take about the same amount of time...2 years.

the only thing that matters otherwise is that the office makes you comfortable. if the other office makes you more comfortable and it's more expensive, and farther away, then you should go there.

you'll be so happy with straight teeth. it will affect your entire life including career and spouse hunting.

You're a real cheapskate, you know that? Orthodontic work costs thousands of dollars, and you're counting nickle and dimes for a simple evaluation?

The doctor will need to take x-rays and impressions and will make study models. He/she will then formulate a treatment plan for you. The time period between consultation and placement of brackets can vary, depending on the doctor's schedule.

I don't know just make sure that if it's a "free eval" that it's free if you choose not to use that ortho...oh and whatever you do, get a second eval..you'd be surprised at the differences in both treatment and cost.
