My calico does that all the time and don't now why. When she lays in my lap I usually get the butt end but she gives hubby the front. Maybe it is a sign of respect for cats??

Cats are funny animals, you have to earn their attention & affections. When your cat has his back to you when wanting a cuddle it means they are comfortable with you & feel safe around you, it's also there way of looking out for predators that might want to harm you.
