I am very proud to be a liberal.

For me, being liberal means:
- I am open-minded
- I believe in fairness and equality for all ppl
- I will fight against discrimination of anyone even if they differ from my beliefs.
- I believe in free speech
- I believe teaching tolerance of ppl who are different than myself makes society more healthy and community oriented
- I believe in my country and everything it stands for 110%
- I believe all ppl have the right to have a voice even if it is small
- I believe in Roosevelt's New Deal - it made our country great
- I believe we have a duty to take care of our elderly
- I believe when you are blessed, u should give something back to your community
- I believe it is healthy for our society to take care of the needy. It deters crime.

I could go on and on but those r the basics.

So what is so 'bad' about being a liberal? I don't get it.

FlashVirus - u r being defensive. My pt is that I am called a bloody liberal for my views and I see nothing wrong with them and a lot of republicans happen to agree.

You misunderstood the tolerance portion - liberals believe in teaching tolerance. I have actually been told by repulbicans that teaching tolerance is what is wrong with our society. That has nothing to do with race.

I know exactly why they say 'bleeding heart': because they actually believe that helping others, being fair, and tolerating things they don't believe in is being weak.

They truly see those things that I believe make us a stronger society as weak. They are caught up in the 'survival of the fittest' mentality which is barbarian in an advance society.

I think you are exactly right in everything you said. FDR's New Deal saved our country after the great depression when so many were sufferring. It taught us to be humble yet be strong... to speak softly yet carry a big stick.

And yes we have a duty to take care of our elderly and needy. The elderly have spent their lives working and giving us the country we have today. The needy are the less fortunate of our society and we should not have them living under bridges.

This country seems to be losing its 'humanity'. I was recently talking with a friend about us bombing Na. and Hiroshima... he actually said, "Who cares 2 million died, they weren't Americans." That seems to be the mentality of today and I find that extremely sad. A lot of misguided Americans seem to be moving more toward.. 'what can I get' rather than 'how can I help make my country great'

Yep, you just explained why "liberal" is a nasty cuss. Some of it is all well and good... the equality and anti-discrimination part is fine, the patriotism is fine, but that's where you lose it.

- "all ppl have the right to a voice even if it is small" -- yes, they do have a right to a VOICE but they do not have a right to railroad the voice of the populace

- FDR's New Deal was a decade-plus of horrible programs that ruined our great nation. ND created the welfare society and actually did NOT pull the country out of the depression. ND expanded the government by unprecedented leaps. ND created the social security program which will bankrupt and steal money from Gen X and Yers with no apologies.

- Duty to the elderly -- while I "get" this idea, I also understand that the elderly have a duty to prepare for their old age and not depend on the government and other peoples money... they worked when they were younger, right? I am not planning on government funds to support my retirement.

- Giving back -- you cannot (or at least should not be able to) force people to "give back" to the community. If they choose to, that gift will come back to them. Why should you be able to tell someone else what to give to and how much to give?

- Conservatives will tell you straight up that they have absolutely no problem with taking care of the needy in society. It IS a necessary part of having a decent and stable community. However, there is a HUGE difference between the NEEDY and the WANTY.

Unfortunately for you, being a liberal in this day and age has morphed into wanting ever higher taxes and protecting every small sect of society, including criminals, pedophiles, and illegal aliens. Being a liberal is about "feelings" and not offending anyone. Being a liberal is not about practicality, it is about a warped idea of a few people being in power and everyone else living "equally". Being a liberal also means forcing tolerance on others. Not everyone thinks being gay is ok and not everyone HAS to think that way but liberals feel that they have the authority to enforce thought patterns. Liberals feel that they have the authority to teach other peoples children about sex and orientation because they want to become the thought police. It is legal to be racist or homophobe; it may not be "right" but it IS legal.

" I believe in fairness and equality for all ppl'
umm yeah everyone believes in civil rights. If you are talking about "spreading the wealth", then. would you want your hard earned money taken away for some druggie who dropped out of high school?

" I believe in free speech"
Yes, so do republicans. Have you ever heard of the ACLU? They are very liberal and support freedom of speech as long as it agrees with them.

"I believe we have a duty to take care of our elderly"
And republicans don't beleive this?

"- I believe all ppl have the right to have a voice even if it is small"
Republicans do too

"- I believe teaching tolerance of ppl who are different than myself makes society more healthy and community oriented"

Howcome liberals call it racist or a hate crime when a white person does something bad to a minority person? but when it happens the other way around the person is just troubled by soceity?

So, you believe in teaching tolerance of people who are different than yourself , yet you refer to people that have common sense and disagree with you as 'Repigs'. I assume that when you say that you will fight against discrimination of anyone even if they differ from your beliefs, that doesn't include those of us with brains (Repigs). And, why is it that Liberals need to say that they believe in their country and everything it stands for. If your a Conservative it doesn't need to be said.
There is nothing wrong with being a liberal. It's just that it is misguided support of Marxist Socialism which has never worked.

I can only tell you why I feel that way...b/c I hate liberalism in anything. Don't you hate it when you go to a baseball game & the umpire let's everything slide on the other team (not yours)!? I hate it when my husband wants to raise the kids in a liberal fashion...letting them get by w/everything.

That's basically what the word means is letting things slide..."nothing is really wrong, people just think differently", right? I guess this is how you think, if you consider yourself 'liberal'?

I hate liberalism b/c people who are liberal lack the guts to stand up & say "Hey, that's not right!" You call it having an "open mind". Well, quit having an open mind & have guts enough to stand up for what's right/wrong!

I believe in those same ideas and I'm a conservative. Some liberals go to the extreme and act almost anti American but if you say that conservatives use the word liberal like it's a dirty word why did you say Repigs and is that kind of like Demorats?

If, as you say you:

"-believe in free speech
- I believe teaching tolerance of ppl who are different than myself makes society more healthy and community oriented"

then why label people "repigs"? Shouldn't you be embracing their difference of opinion?

Nothing bad being a liberal. Repigs (I prefer repugs) tend to think that their opinion is America's opinion, their voice is America's voice. So whenever you disagree with them you are "against America". F*ck no. Repugs don't speak for all of America. They need to learn to speak for themselves.Liberals are not against America. Liberals are all FOR the country.
Some statistics: About 126 million voted in the last election. Bush barely got 51% of the votes, that is 64.26 million. The population was about 295 million. So that's 21.7% of the total population.
Of all people 80% were eligible voters that is 236 million, so people who voted for Bush were 27.2% of all eligible voters. Of the eligible voters, 74% were registered which is 174.6 million. Republican voters were 36.8%.
And they think they speak for all of America!

And come to think of it, Jesus Christ was the ultimate liberal. Against all traditions of the day.

not everybody who has registered republican uses liberal like its a dirty word.......the only ones that do are the ones that you see on TV......given that yes there are people that strongly agree with them.....but if you notice, you used the word "repigs"...suggesting that you are no more openminded than any of the hyper-conservative people....is that "fair and equal" for registered republicans? i think not.
