Well, you might try the Crown hotel on Sukhumvit 29, near the Emporium -.. but you know the deal - you go into an expensive area and the rooms are more expensive.. there are cheap guest houses especially in the Khao San rd area.. not sure how much you want to spend.. Ambassador Hotel on Sukh near soi 11 is abt 1200 baht a night - - Dynasty or Nana on soi 4 - soi 8 has some decent places in and around that 1000-1200 bath range..
If you go all the way out to soi 97? or so - I think it is - there is Romance - pronounced in Thai "lo-man" and I think that is decent and maybe 600 for a night.. but you are passed the last skytrain stop if that is an issue.. I think many of the places you can find on line or as a walk - in though I think online is prbably cheaper.. try www.asiarooms.. google around - and have fun

The really inexpensive (Cheap) lodgings in the Sukhumvit area between Soi 1 and 21 are not usually available over the Internet. If you want to be sure of accommodations during the high season Dec-Jan it's best to book a room in advance. For some strange reason rooms are available and usually cheaper when booked through an agent rather than directly from the hotel. One hotel wanted $200 per night when an agent got me the same room for $40. I typically stay at the Manhattan, soi 15 for about $26 a night when booked through an agent. I use http://www.HotelTravel.com but there are other web based agents.

I have lived in Thailand over a year now and have visited 5 times previously. Whenever I travel within the country I just check out the hotels/ guesthouses and if they are clean and the staff seems nice I just book it. I usually look at 3 places and take the best one out of the three.

On Sukhumvit there are a ton of hotels and guesthouses that are cheap with prices that range from $5/day upwards.......... I recommend that you just come and check them out for yourself and then decide on what you want.

Its possible to find a place to stay for less than $5 a day that is clean and has a nice staff to boot!

You do not have to book anything

The Sathorn Villa hotel is cheap, clean, and comfortable. It is hardly impressive by any standard but if you go on the cheap it is a good choice. If you have more money to spend you can't loose with the Conrad or JW Marriott. Not cheap compared to other hotels in Thailand but still a deal compared to what a hotel like that costs in US / Europe

Check out www.asiarooms.com and find one that suits you. Those listed are pretty clean, so you should be alright.
