Dogs don't have the muscles in their face to smile, but you can see happiness in their eyes!!! A smile doesn't count if they are baring their teeth!

Dogs also have a heavy panting sound that has been identified (by the oddballs who get paid to study this kind of thing) as a laugh. They do this when they are playing with other dogs, not just with people. Its a sign that its all just friendly play and they're having a good time.
I think dogs mimic their owners when they pull a smile, or learn that owners react in a positive way to the behaviour and so repeat it; because pulling your lips back over our teeth is a stress reaction or aggression when done by one dog to another. But when dogs smile to their owner they seem ok with the whole thing.

I truly believe that dogs can smile....I adopted a Shi-tzu and when he is happy, his whole mouth opens wide and i think he is smiling!!! My husband just recently brought home a little kitten, and Sammy, my dog, smiled the whole time I was bathing the kitten.....Sammy is just such a happy little guy!!! My oppinion is that dogs can definitely smile.....I know it makes my day to get a smile from him!!!

Sincerely, Mommy to Sammy
