In the early days of NOI ( nation of islam ) they called themselves Moslems ( moo-za-lums). The muslims in the rest of the world prefer muslims.
I dont know if the NOI continue to use Moslems or not.

"Muslim" is more correct, because it's pronounced "MOOSE lem" which is the Arabic pronunciation, Muslim for men and Muslima for women. (Arabic speakers, please correct me if I'm wrong.)
"Moslem" is technically correct because there are no hard and fast rules for transliteration, but I wouldn't recommend using this spelling. English speakers often pronounce this spelling "MOZZ lem" with a nasal quality.

muslim is closer the pronounciation in arabic.
