Both are on the shelves at the grocery store, was wondering what the difference is, seems like if it was the same thing they'd have one or the other on the shelf, not both.

one is lumpy and one is smooth and Jelly is made from fruit juice and jam is made from boiled fruit. As a result, jam has pieces of fruits and jelly does not.

Jam is made from the whole fruit-- with the skins and seeds removed-that is somewhat of a slurry when ready to can...- i.e. grape jam. Jam is usually not translucent.
Grape jelly is made from the JUICE of the grape and frequently is translucent, as is Apple and Plum jelly.
Preserves usually have recognizable pieces of the fruit-- i.e. peach preserves or fig preserves.
For specific differences, get the requirements for competition jam,jelly and preserves from your state fair--or check one of the food TV websites.
For taste-- I like them all-- pear preserves are wonderful and hardly anyone makes them anymore-- I would if I had a source--of pears. Home canned plum jam or jelly has wonderful taste and if you did a blind test-- you Might-Might choose the commercial product-- but it would surprise me.

Jelly is "firmer" because it's made with gelatin. Jam is "runnier" and softer because it's basically cooked fruit.
