I don't think there's a thing wrong with it! If you want to live in this country....LEARN THE LANGUAGE! I am sick and tired of going to the stores seeing so much written in Spanish now. There's no reason for it. This is the USA.....we speak ENGLISH....and if you don't like it, and you don't want to learn it.....there's also another freedom this country offers you...THE FREEDOM TO LEAVE!

If you move to a country you need to learn that country's language, end of story. It's a matter of communication. Would you go to Japan and expect everyone there to speak to you in English?
Americans did not speak First nations language when it arrived in The States , nope it exterminated , GENOCIDED 120 millions " natives" over a span of 20 years surpassing only the Spanish who took about 100 years to clean and genocide 100 millions "indians".. an incredible RECORD because the american did not use gas chambers then.. but plain and simple bullets and swords..
The US First Nation genocide was a genocide that surpassed the Jewish Holocaust and Hitler' final solution by a mile bi comparison..
Hello ? dont speak apache? you are not allowed in country..
In insight you should give the immigrants and the poor(that the US created with its NAFTA policies) the right to vote so the US can get ride of the Rebublican/Democrat regime and replace it with something more friendly and human.. speaking english only ? madame half the US was build on Spanish land..

Business owner's are free to do with their business as they see fit. Although I'd love nothing more than to have our government establish English as our official language, I'm afraid if all business owners did that, it would create a very definite divide among cultures. I know I really dislike being surrounded by Spanish speaking people wherever I go, and I would go to an establishment that banned other languages besides English. But it's not good until the government steps in to make English official.

I believe it should be left up to the store owner. But I do think immigrants need to learn English. Years ago, I went to a doctor who was Chinese. Although he was very nice,I couldn't understand anything he said to me so I found a doctor I could understand. If I go into a store/restaurant where they can't speak English,I leave. I have been to several businesses owned by middle easterners who spoke English very well so I continue to go there. Also, there are a lot of Asian owned nail salons. They do a nice job but continue to carry on conversations in their own language with each other rather than speaking to their customers in English. When I have my hair or nails done I like being able to have a conversation with the stylist/manicurist. Therefore, I go to those businesses where English is spoken. I am not prejudiced or racist but I don't enjoy being made to feel like a foreigner in my own country.

We should try to promote the english language more and try to force people (immigrants) into learning it. Also if we become more open to spanish language, illegals will find it easier to come in and live. Sad but true
Immigrants (legal ones) should learn the language of the country
If I was moving to Japan.. I would learn japanese
If I was moving to Spain/south america coutnry i would learn spansih
you get the point.

No, it's a matter of personal choice on the part of the business owner. I equally support that sub shop owner's decision as much as the others that welcome foreign language customers.
Keep in mind that it's not just illegals that can't speak English. We get many foreign visitors every year whose English language skills are extremely limited. Also, many LEGAL immigrants have very limited to non-existant English skills. Sure, they'll learn the language eventually, but why exclude them as customers?
Doing this "because of the illegals" is short-sighted but he has the right to do so. There are plenty of legal customers that he'll not get, but again that's his choice.

I think if you're going to place a sign like that outside your place of business, you'd better learn how to speak English yourself...that guy from Philly has the vocabulary of a mentally handicapped 12 year old. When he learns basic grammar and diction, then maybe he can ask that his customers do the same.

I think so.And I agree with people that if you move to a different country you should speak that countries language or learn it.I immigrated in 1991 from Germany and I have no problem whatsoever to speak English. After all this is the country I chose so I should speak the language.I can always speak German at home with my children so that they don't forget their native language and I also think that it only helps children to be bilingual.

Only if you're going to let established Spanish business put up signs that say "Must speak Spanish. Manager has the right to refuse service."
Yeah, your idea sounds ridiculous too.

I was reading about that last week. I have kind of mixed opinions about it. I do support the idea behind it, but what about tourists who are only trying to grab a bite? Right now I'm 50/50 on it but I would definitely support a ban on employees speaking among themselves in foreign languages in the workplace!

I think private businesses are the business of whomever owns them. Mostly, I think as long as it is US currency, they will want customers to feel comfortable there.
I think we should not be expected to have to learn a language from the home country of people who come to our country and refuse to assimilate, however.
In California it is hard for children to get a foreign language in school other than Spanish, for example. They don't want to learn a different language to use at HOME necessarily, they want language to read certain works in the original or to prepare them for places they want to travel as adults.
I think it is a shame we don't limit our immigration, legal and illegal to the point where newcomers can be assimilated. Instead they can go their entire lives without learning to speak English, and many of them prefer it that way. That causes social segregation, reduces their opportunities for success, and allows resentment to fester.
