I am planning to buy a projector for our temple - as a teaching aid. I am looking at the following projector -

Viewsonic XGA DLP
Viewsonic PJ458D 2000 Lumen XGA 1024 x 768 DLP Projector
Only $779.99 after rebate*

Requirements:
1. To be able to display presentations to the class of 20 - 25 or sometimes bigger audience (100 - 200 people)
2. To be able to view videos (via DVD or VCR) in place of a flat screen monitor

I realize that we may need additional speakers for audio. Any suggestions??

The projector you suggested is a good one. DLP technology doesn't wear out and the only maintenance cost is for the light bulb, which should last a couple years with moderate use. Typically projectors under $1000 are only going to work for a group of that size in a fairly dark room, so please keep that in mind. Another good feature of that projector is its resolution- typically lower priced projectors tend to be 800x600.

As for speakers, any portable boom box should work fine. Just be sure to find one that has audio inputs.

Check out BenQ.com for the projectors.
And for the video go DVD not much more than a VCR and much better picture quality.
