I have seen it both donut and doughnut in many places, even businesses - I think it is based on your preference as long as you are consistent. Grammatically though donut is correct.

Doughnut. Because it is made of dough. But the spell check doesn't know this, either. I was at a sporting event where a food vendor had hand written a sign that spelled doughnuts "dognuts." Now, I'm quite certain they were not selling dog nuts!!!!!!
