If you didn't discover the mistake until after you had left the shop, would you go back? How much would you have to be overpaid by before you thought it was worthwhile? Would it be different if it was a corner shop?

if i knew before i left the store then, yes, i would own up. if i discovered it after i would not go out of my way to go back. however, to keep my karma clear i would make sure to do something nice with the money -- not nice like get myself a manicure, nice like donate it to one of those charity boxes or something.

I don't always check my change .. but if I do find that I have been given too much change I point out the error. Not sure if I have ever had to go back into a shop though. As to how much .. if you fuss about the pennies people think you are a freak! And no... all shops are the same although in a large supermarket / department store it wouldn't be so easy to return the extra change if you realised after leaving the checkout.

Not at the Supermarket ,no. I used to own up if I thought the cashier had made a mistake, but these days the tills tell them how much change to give and if they're too lazing to check....Corner shops are different and it would depend on when I noticed.

Depending on how stupid the cashier was. If they were paying attention and made the honest mistake I'll tell them, but if they're just being stupid then that's they're problem. I only did it once though. The girl was busy talking to the cashier next to her about her boyfriend problems (like I care) kept throwing my stuff in the bag never said hi how are you or nothing rang something up twice then gave me an attitude when I told her about it. So when it came time to pay she was still busy talking so right in front of her I counted my change noticed she gave me $5.00 extra and said nothing grabbed my items I just baught and walked out after I said have a nice night and she ignored me.

I wouldn't go back, shops like Tesco's etc can afford it unfortunately in many stores it's the cashier that has to pay back the money, even if it's something like a fake note they make the poor cashier on minimum wage pay it back.
In an ideal world the cashier wouldn't be penalised & the shops can afford to take the loss the poor cashier on minimum wage probably can't.
Even after saying that I'd still keep the money

i would give them the money back if it wouldnt cause such an uproar and make me stay there an extra ten minutes

i figure, the lines shouldnt be so long at the supermarket in the first place, so for them making me wait, they owe me about 86 cents or whatever

i tried once to give some money back at a supermarket counter, they had to call a supervisor over to put a key in the drawer and it held me up

never again

I would go back and I have gone back. Honesty is always the best policy. Even if it is their fault the mistake was made, they might be in trouble and lose their job over a few bucks in your pocket. Would you want someone to return the money if you made the mistake to save your job?

this happened a few times to my sister in-law and i always said how lucky she was this never happened to me but then it happened 3 times to me since and i owned up straight away in the shop as i realised it probably due to guilt at the time but if i could have kept quiet i would have cos it just gives you a buzz puts you in good mood for the day and although it's wrong you didn't ask for it and it was only a small amount.

essentially it depends how much money they over-changed you and how far the shop is. It really is not worth feeling too much guilt as the mistake lies in the shop. I would enjoy your windfall and if the guilt becomes too much donate the money to a worthy cause.

I would definitely give it back, whether I noticed right away or after I got home. The cashiers have to pay back to the register whatever is short in the drawer, (most places, at least) and I'm sure they don't make alot!!! I would hope someone did that for me!
