First ...There are so many factors to consider,
-where do you want to work? locally, close to the ocean but in the states, out of country?
-full time/part time .. which do you want to work? which is available?
-what are the payment policies of the companies where you want to work?
So, the best way to find out is pick your spot and call around the shops and ask.
This is almost like asking what a good accountant can earn? Where? What are your skills? What's your experience? What company? and so on.
When I was an instructor some guys from my dive shop and others on the island would earn hourly rates, a cut of the dive fees, or a cut of the business .. just depending on the shop and their seniority.
Second ... "a really good under water job". I used to instruct on St John in the Virgin Islands. On a fabulous day, I might get 4 dives in (2 morning, 1 afternoon, 1 night). On a great day, I would get 3 dives. On an average day, I might get 2. Then there were the days when I had to work on the boat, repair tanks, clean bilges, fill the spare tanks, etc .. and got 0 dives. And then there were the bad weather days, slow days, no guest days, etc.
Over 2 years I did get 500+ dives in, but realize that I was working 6 days a week. That's roughly 600 days. So, on average, I got 1 dive per day .. one 30 to 60 minute dive per day .. on average. The rest of the time is REAL work. I don't mean to burst any bubbles here ... I loved my time in the Caribbean, and being a scuba instructor was great, but unless you fall into a senior spot with a shop that is always busy with multiple boats and dives per day, then you probably won't be spending a ton of time in the water.
