See, thats my personal opinion too.
If god created us- then she is like our mother, and your not supposed to fear your mother (yea we all know they can snap- but thats not the point.) Or worship your mom, you should just love them if you do.
Besides, fear of going to hell or being punished is such a Sh*tty reason for being a good person.

The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge. Fear God who is all powerful. Not man.
Isaiah 11:2 & 3, 33:6; Proverbs 1:7, 9:10,Psalms 22,23
Luke 12:5, 2 Corinthians 7:1
Fear of God is realizing there are consequences to actions. And God will discipline His own Children. God is Love, but He is a Holy God and we need to give Him all respect and reverence.
2nd Timothy 1:7 God has not given us a Spirit of Fear (intimidating master), but a Spirit of power, love & discipline.
John 4:18. There is no fear in Love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.
Unforgiveness is not Love.

I cannot tell you what jesus said because the bible was written by men. And I do believe we should love god, I can only interpret that the word fear was used to make us do the right things so we can get into heaven, but I choose to do the right things because I want god to be proud of me and because I want to be a good person. If this is the definition of fear than I guess I am fearing of God. but I do not choose it like that. I want to be good. I want to be the best person I can be, and I want to go to heaven. I choose to believe that god is good and not fearful.

I don't remember the chapter and verses, but we as Christians are told in the Bible to both fear and love God, because He is a jealous God.
God-fearing does not necessarily mean that we are supposed to be afraid of God, but that we are supposed to be respectful and reverant in our worship of Him.
We should be worshipping God because we love Him, but also because we want to, not because we "have to".
I hope that this helps you! God bless you in your search for truth!

I was never taught by my parents to fear God. I was always told that God is a loving God and that he'll always be there when I need him. It was a huge shock to go to confirmation class and find that my pastor believed the opposite. I left as soon as possible and eventually became a Non-Denominational Happy Pagan Person. God and I are still on excellent terms; we just choose NOT to allow religion to screw up our relationship.

If you feel we should fear god then you disagree with F.D.R. when he said, "we have nothing to fear but fear its self." So if you are with the president, then you must be atheist. If you are not with our greatest president, then you are not a proud American. Ether way shame on you. And shame on you for questioning religion, you know for asking that a few hundred years ago you would have been tortured to death. Plus, don't you listen to your priest, we are all just a pimple on gods a. But mostly shame on you for even asking this and caring about the answer, don't you know that the bible is fairy tails, and that we evolved from monkeys.

You should fear God because He is the Holy One. He is a powerful God and can turn you into a pillar of salt in an instant if He wanted to. God is the most endearing God of gods. You shaould also love Him, because He gave His one and only Son to die on the Cross to save you and me from our sins. Praise the Lord for He is Holy!!!!!!
BTW: in both these scriptures it tells you about fear: Psalm 111:10 and in Proverbs 19:23

God is our parent, we do fear hurting our parents, so probably the term God-fearing come up. Also to fear his wrath, in case we do wrong. (Wrath is a misnomer-I don't think God can ever get angry, like a Prent who corrects his child by punishment)
As far as Hindus are concerned, God is not to be feared by the just, the righteous. If you are afraid of God, then you have done something wrong.

Fearing God means that we acknowledge and understand that he is all-powerful. A child can fear and love his parents at once, knowing that they have power over him and that they love him and want the best for him. Understanding fear in that sense, we are to both fear God and love God.

See this site about a new religion all about this subject. Fearing God is just as bad as fearing yourself. Practical advice on what to do (out of love, not fear).
