It's not like knowing that Bob from Brazil believes in God is going to change your whole life. Why can't people just live their own life and be happy while letting others do the same? I seriously think so many people use Yahoo Answers to harrass others and make themselves feel better. It just ends up getting frustrating for EVERYONE though.

Just relax and live your own life.

I see many people talking about how people are just politely curious, looking for people with similar beliefs to relate with, etc. That's perfectly fine and I support THAT, but there's also people that ask questions (or leave answers) that are extremely rude and belitting enough to call non-believers "retarded," "stupid," "uniformed," etc. That's the kind of "harrassment" I'm talking about.

It doesn't matter to me at all what someone else believes. If I change my faith, it would be MY decision only. And I don't wish to convert anyone else. I am however curious as to what another believes for the purpose of getting into a (hopefully) serious educational debate. I'm one who loves learning about different religions. It's interesting how people think. It's interesting to discover the similarities and differences between the different religions. I try to not respond when some of the users here harass others, though I'm only human. And I hope nothing I've said has been taken as harassment, as I've never meant anything I've said that way. I wish people would just remain silent when they want to make negative and insulting comments or call others names. I guess all I can do is try to lead by example.

The trouble is the nature of the beliefs.

Suppose, for example, that you and I were in a cafe. Suppose that you believed that there was a bomb under the counter that is set to go off (killing everyone in the building) in five minutes, and I did not. Why would you care about my belief?

Unfortunately, the situation with religion is a lot harder. You (I am taking the liberty of casting you in the missionary role, I realize - if I am inaccurate in doing so, I apologize) believe that when I die, if I lack certain beliefs, I will suffer for that lack - whether it be in eternal torment or even the absence of eternal bliss. You also believe - since I am telling you this - that I lack these beliefs, and in fact believe them to be not only false, but almost risible. But unlike the bomb in the cafe, neither of us have really strong evidence to convince the other with.

(Yes, many people believe they have strong evidence. Given how rarely conversions occur, however, I'm inclined to be skeptical of this.)

In all honesty, it's the last sentence that causes your kind of question. We generally can't convert each other to our own beliefs. But we will care, because the consequences of not converting are still great.

A lot of faiths believe that by "helping other see the truth" (whatever that truth may be) is a large part of their worship. There are also those who's faith is troubled and they need to yell at others in order to feel strong in their own self. Sort of like bullies.

It's very sad to me.

However, open discussion about religion is a good thing; it can help teach toleance. Of course, that is if everyone can be adult about it and not get into the "one way" mentality.

People are fascinated with the lives of others. What they think, believe, everything.

Think of it this way (Though a bit morbid). When a car crash happens on the highway, people slow down in their cars and look what happened. Some may make the excuse that these people slow down because they want to avoid causing another crash. But riddle me this: If there was no risks and trhey could speed up to 100 MPH if they wanted to... Would people still slow down to look at the crash?

This has to do with the human fascination about EVERYTHING. We want to learn more about animals, plants, and humans themselves. Its pretty much human nature for someone to poke their nose in about religion.

Another factor that answers your question is people who want to convert others. Many people ask about religion because they would like to point out the flaws and say "Hey, come over to my religion".

The simplist answer to your question is that it is Human nature.

I really doubt these things will ever change.

Below site (new religion) explains why people do it and also quotes Jesus as saying how "you look at the speck in your brother's eye when you have a plank in your own eye." Christians are following Old Testament which Jesus rebelled against.

It also has the Jesus quote "Do not judge or you too shall be judged." This is exactly what Christians do whereas Jews ,devil worshippers (if there really are any), and atheists do not do this. So all of them EXCEPT the Christians are following the teachings of Jesus.

It's not just in religion... it's in all the yahoo answer categories-- it seems that a lot of people like to belittle others and their decisions/choices/lives. I guess it makes some feel better about themselves. But then again- all the opinions and beliefs are shared from behind a keyboard... with no face or name to go with it. It's easy for people to be jerks like that. you are so right.

I think people get annoyed with those from religious circles that like to preach to us and tell us we should all follow their god. But I don't think that most people who let us know their beliefs are preaching, I think they just want to discuss something with a group of people who share their beliefs. Some people just jump to the wrong conclusion and condemn those with real questions based on the wrong doings a few loud voices. Personally, I'm not religious, I chose to believe in science. But I don't have a problem with people who just want to ask a religious question. I agree with you, how does it affect my life? It doesn't, so I just let it go by.

Because spreading the Word of God is usually what religions teach to reform more of whatever form of "GOD" they are selling. Most people don't know how to be happy and choose for themselves, therefore having to belittle or harrass others for their beliefs.

Some people enjoy learning new things, and having intellectual, stimulating conversations and debates with others. Some people have open minds and are open to learning from and about others, instead of just insisting that they already have all of the correct answers and are not interested in what others think.
