When the Spaniards explored the new world, they brought along priests. Along the way, they converted many of the native people. Also, some of the explorers stayed behind and married natives.

Blessed Junperro Serra is an example. He was a Franciscan priest who traveled the west coast of the USA. He started little missions, each a day's journey by foot apart.....and named them after saints

San Francisco
Santa Ana
San Diego
San Rafael

...you get the idea.
It was the saem thing throughout the Americas. The Spanish were among the first to explore and colonize, and they brought their Catholic faith with them.

Spain was Catholic predominantly, and at about 1450-1600, Spain went about colonizing much of the world. All of South America, except Brazil; the Philippines, Central America up to Mexico, parts of Africa. When they say people converted to Christianity, it was mostly by force and fear that the Spanish Conquistadors persuaded the new people they conquered to adopt the new religion.

Because usually people who are repressed believe whatever they are told. Religions are usually just a brainwash anyway, so if you believe in something-its usually because either thats all you know, or thats what works for you.
