Yeah, the same is sometimes true for women as well. I think it has to do with the fact that when you're in a relationship you're probably more confident and secure and that makes you more appealing. (Especially if the person you're with has had an influence on your appearance as well!)
Also most women feel less guarded around men who obviously aren't looking or have that vibe of not being on the prowl. In a weird way, there's something more interesting about a man who's NOT interested or available....like you can actually relate as two individuals and not two people trying to hook up.

I hear you, women seem to only like men that other women have. Maybe its their own will to conquer or something. I have often wondered if women throw themselves at non-single men because some other woman has done the legwork and found out that the guy is worth dating.

When you're in a relationship, you're not looking anymore, so that's when you're more likely to notice things like that.
Not only that, most people are more confident and happy. When you're single, quite a few people are miserable, and why would you want to be with someone who isn't happy?

Women (and men, for that matter) want what is unobtainable. When you become unavailable, your hot factor goes up at least 10 points!
