Isn't Captain's a spiced rum? I would go with Bacardi. It is more basic and you can use it to make so many different drinks.
Good Luck

The first link below has a long list of mixed drinks, listed by the kind of liquor used for them. Vodka has more drinks made from it than any other liquor (probably because it has little taste itself, so it only enhances the taste of other ingredients), so if you want to be most versatile with only one bottle, buy vodka. And vodka can be mixed with all kinds of concentrated flavors to make shooters, too.
If you want to serve something that's not for mixing but rather for drinking straight up, then you've got a tough decision ahead, because tastes vary so much. I like bourbon on the rocks, but I've got a few friends who absolutely insist on a glass of Scotch whiskey. Younger crowds will be plenty happy with the cheap stuff - Captain Morgan or Bacardi, as you mention. For more sophisticated crowds it can be fun to try exotic liqueurs, or themed alcoholic drinks (have a shooters party, or have everyone bring a different bourbon, or try 10 variations of martinis).
And you didn't mention it, but of course beer and wine are essential party elements! As microbrews proliferate it's fun to have parties where everyone brings a sixpack of something unique. And there are as many tastes in wine as there are wine drinkers - parties that specialize in certain grapes (everyone bring a merlot or a riesling) or certain regions (everyone bring an Australian wine) can be fun and help expand everyone's palate.

In a group of 10 people, you will find that they have 10 different preferences. However, just to add my two cents and get my two points, I tried some great mixed drinks this weekend (my son was visiting his g-ma and I got to have a rare weekend to myself!)The first was called a Comfortable Screw, which is simply Southern Comfort and Orange Juice, and was surprisingly good. The other was UV Red Vodka (cherry flavored vodka) and coke. AMAZING. Anyway, best of luck, and enjoy!

Rum is usually served with coke and fancy cocktails.
I'd say the popular choice would be vodka which goes with all sodas, juices etc.

Grey Goose Vodka
Can drink nicely by itself or it's a great mixer with any beverage.
