1. Atheists aren't a "race". Technically a "race" doesn't exist.
2. If Evolution is a religion, then so is a taste for Pepsi products over others. It's an absurd claim.

Religion is not a part of evolution. I don't think there is a race with not beliefs besides modern day atheists. One theory I had heard was religion was a way for man to explain what was happening around him when science was not around yet.

Religion has not evolved, rather it has become diversified into various groups who pull away from their roots because well, they just think they know better or the old ways just don't suit their life style ... so they make something new up.
I really don't believe there was ever a race that didn't believe in "something" spiritual, though some individual people feel that life only exists in this physical realm. To each their own.

Yes, religion is a part of cultural evolution. Culture evolves and spreads via "memes", the analogy was originally that a meme was the equivalent of a gene, but they act more like independent organisms. A religion (or other meme) spreads like a virus among human populations, some people are "infected" and pass it on while others ignore it.

I don't think there's ever been a culture without a "religion", if you mean religion are beliefs one has in things unseen or unprovable.
I would argue that atheism in itself is a "belief" in unbelief.
However, I believe (pardon the pun) all cultures have a belief in some sort of god, deity, divine being, etc.

Child of God, that is a thought-provoking question !
I am a Christian who believes that evolution is the process by which God created the universe.
So, to answer your question, I believe that when human beings were made in God's image (given a soul), they were set apart from all other animals.
That connection with God is the "heart and soul" (no pun intended) of religion. What other animal cries out in pain, sorrow or anguish "Oh, God!" (even atheists!)?
It is our innate connection to and knowlege of (whether we admit it or not) that someone more powerful than ourselves exists -- and is aware of, and concerned about, our existence. Peace!

I think humans evolved to wonder about things we don't understand, to look for patterns in nature, to fear death, and to defer to authority figures. In themselves, these are all survival traits, but together, they create a fertile ground for religion. You could think of ideas as having their own evolution, and the human mind/society provided a niche which religion evolved to fill.

There was this one guy that placed his belief in feces. He attracted lots of druggie goth teenagers and burnt-out hippies. He died, got buried, and became as feces does when placed on the ground. The wiccans and satanists lived in his memory as pieces of sh*t.
