My grand-mother used to make this dessert, but she never wrote down the recipe. It had whipped cream, coconut, pineapple ( i'm sure there were other fruits and stuff but i just can't remember!)She kept it refrigerated. It was a cool and refresing dessert.
Thanx!

Rings a bell. I'm not sure it's the same, because the recipe my family loves has sour cream instead of whipped cream, which would make it considerably sweeter. Anyway, here goes:

Ambrosia

Mix the following ingredients. Refrigerate. Serve chilled:
1 cup miniature marshmallows
1 can mandarin orange slices, drained
1 medium can chunk pineapple, drained
1 cup flaked coconut
1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
1 cup sour cream

Bon appêtit!

Yes, my grandmother used to make this also, though I think hers was wither frozen or congealed in some way- I have looked up the recipe online and come across several different recipes for ambrosia... I have also tried a few varieties and none of them seems like "the one" It could just be that it has been so long that my memory and taste buds are not in accordance with each other. You might take a basic recipe and experiment and tweak it to your liking .

here is one I found, my grandmothers was very much like this but without the pecans- I have tried it with almonds and that is good too but I am pretty sure hers had no nuts :

1 cup orange juice
3 medium oranges, peeled and sectioned
1 can (8 ounces) pineapple chunks, undrained
1/2 cup seedless red grapes, halved
1/2 cup shredded coconut
1/2 cup chopped pecans
PREPARATION:
Combine juice, orange sections, pineapple, and grapes, stirring gently to blend. Refrigerate until serving time. Fold in coconut and pecans just before serving.
This Ambrosia Recipe serves 6.

here is another for a congealed ambrosia- again I would not put the nuts but that is up to you :

1 package (3 ounces) orange gelatin
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup boiling water
3 oranges, peeled and cut into sections, sections halved
1 can (8 ounces) crushed pineapple undrained
1 cup flaked coconut
1 cup chopped pecans
1 cup sour cream
PREPARATION:
Dissolve gelatin and sugar in boiling water; chill until mixture begins to thicken. Fold in remaining ingredients; blend well. Pour into a 13x9x2-inch pan; chill until firm. Congealed ambrosia salad serves 10.

I got these recipes from about.com- they said these recipes were a souther thing :) and I am from the south so i figured they were going to be as close as I was going to get to the real thing. I have yet to find a recipe for a frozen ambrosia- maybe I got that confused with something else, who knows! I hope this helps.
Here is the website- it lists other variations of this recipe:

YES!!!!! It's called a Fruit Salad
Coconut was left out of our family receipts for safety reasons. Children. Would not chew the coconut and choke on it.
You can add just about any type of FRESH fruit into a bowl (I never liked it with grapes in it). Make FRESH Whipped Cream and add it to the bowl and thoughly mix it together. But the whipped cream was added just prior to serving it to make sure it was fresh as it breaks down when sitting in the fridge too long. Was never a good salad to take on a picnik.

INGREDIENTS:

1 (8 ounce) can crushed pineapple, drained
3 bananas, sliced
2 cups flaked coconut
2 cups miniature marshmallows
1 cup pecan pieces
1 (16 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
1 cup maraschino cherries

My moms recipe is the same as Joy s recipe for ambrosia except she uses frut coctail in hers as well and no nuts.

My aunts is the same as my moms but with the difference ,she uses nuts and doesnt use coconut but adds Jello
