The minute the pastor laid his hands on my forehead I began to speak in tongues, it was the most amazing experiences I have ever had, but Im confused about having an interpreter. If God urges me to speak in tongues how can I be sure there will be someone to interperet?

Talk to your Pastor, too much confusion here. Look at the type of people who are giving you answers,
Two different uses of tongues.
The tongues you recieved is for your own building up. between you and God. If God wants you to deliver a message in tongues, there will be someone to interpret as he will give the interpretation to someone. But these are two different things.
1Co 14:4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
Your pastor or any other spirit filled believer can explain the difference. Pretty easy, when you are alone and pray just pray in tongues also, it will build you up

There will probably not be an interpreter. There is a difference in the gift of tongues and tongues when receiving the holy ghost. Congratulations though, that is awesome. If you want to know more about the spiritual gifts in the bible, I am sure you pastor can help. Or I can try to help if you want to contact me.

Here's what you need to know. That experience was probably just for you. Therefore there was no need for an interpreter. However, most of the time an interpreter is needed if there is a large group of people...speaking in tongues shows the power of God to give gifts, and interpretation shows the power to understand them. It is quite more benefitial to have both.

This is one of the hotly debated issues in the modern church. Be aware that this is my interpretation of the scripture.

First, Paul instructs us not to obsess over the gift of tongues as it is the least of all the gifts of the Spirit. Having been spirit-filled for many years and having had this gift manifest itself through me many times, it is my opinion that there are three types of tongues described in the scripture.

1. Speaking in another language supernaturally. This is self-explanatory and a type of tongues that I have never witnessed.

2. Speaking in tongues privately when in prayer, meditation, or worship. This is the most common form of tongues. Paul instructs us to pray for interpretation of these tongues. I have often manifested this type of tongues in my life and have found it to be immensely edifying to me. However, it serves little purpose for the body if there is no interpretation. This is why I am strictly against loud, boisterous speaking in tongues in a church service in agreement with Paul. It is disruptive and disorderly when it is this second type of tongues that is manifesting itself.

3. Speaking in tongues for the body. This type of tongues is rarely practiced in the body anymore. Tongues has too often become a setting where the gathered believers merely shout gibberish at one another with no understandable result. Paul clearly states that if someone speaks in tongues there must be two or three interpreters and if there are no interpreters the person desiring to speak in tongues should keep silent and speak to himself and God. I have seen this manifested once and it was awesome.

Seek the gift of tongues and allow the Lord to speak through you, but be aware that the majority of the time what you speak out will be for you alone and not for the body. Pray for interpretation of the utterances of the Spirit, but if the Lord does not make His words clear it is of no consequence. His ways are higher.

Correction to the first poster. The bible clearly states that if you are speaking tongues in public there must be an interpreter.

Tongues is not a spiritual gift of all people, if you truly feel led then there will be an interpreter there.

When you get the baptism it is for praying in tongues. This is your prayer language, it is a different gift to be urged by the Holy Spirit to give a message to the congregation, if that happens, He will prepare someone to give the interpretation. People have to be obedient, and they are not always. I wish you the best.

people have this question all the time, read the bible about tongues, the scripture that deals with that. because it says and i do not quote..that it's okay to speak in tongues because it edifies you, but it's not beneficial to those around you because they can't see or know what God is doing in you...but pray also that you interpret so that you can let others know what God is saying. and it's good to have someone there to agree with the word of God that is coming from you....to prove the word of the Lord.

Speaking in an unknown tongue is to God - and God needs no interpreter. Its when the speaker who is talking in tongues is Prophesying that he or she needs an interpreter.

Prophecy is intended for the congregation to hear, and is not always given in tongues.

My aunt claims she can speak in tongue but all she does it say four or five different things at different times. In the Bible read Acts 2:8 and all of I Corinthians 14 pay close attention to verses 2 and 27. Another thing to pay attention to is that you probably have women preaching, defintely read verse 34. God bless:)

You say that you are the one speaking, "If God urges me to speak..." you should know what you are saying. I have to ask if having an interpreter is the only thing you find strange about this. If so, you may need to consult with a mental physician.
