Do not use any kind of dog or kid shampoo. Use original Dawn (yes the dish soap) My vet told me to do that and it worked. It keeps my dogs really clean and help there skin and keeps fleas away better than dog shampoos do. And if your dog doesn't mind it blow dry their hair dry afterwards.

It's hard to give a dog a bath without getting them wet. What are you gonna do, use dry water?

But meh, make the water smell good. Stronger than the dog smell. Whoever said the peppermint thing, that sounds like a pretty good idea.

Use a little bit of kids shampoo/conditioner when your done washing him with the dog shampoo/conditioner. Then toweldry him as much as possible and don't let him roll around on the floor/furniture/grass for a little while afterwards or he could just pick up smells from that again.

If you have a shower head attachment, you're all set. Get your towel and soap, etc., all ready. Get the dog. Put the dog in the tub. Set the water as warm as you would use, and be careful not to get water in its eyes/ears. If it gets scared, put the sprayer right up next to it and be very calm and nice. Give treats, too, if needed, and definitely treats after. Also, take the dog to the vet. Have it checked for a microchip in case it is lost and it has people who are missing it and check w/ your shelters and lost ads too.

Well I'm not trying to be a smart-alec, but try drying your dog (thoroughly) to get rid of the "wet dog" smell.

Dry dogs don't smell like wet dogs!

Be sure to brush him first to get rid of any loose or matted undercoat, then use a good dog shampoo and rinse him thoroughly. Towel him off to get rid of most of the wetness. To complete the job (weather permitting) it's nice to let him sit in a warm sunny spot as you brush him out and let him dry naturally (and completely).

He'll love it!

I buy Mycodex at the vet and bathe my dog with that. Kills fleas also. Smells good and clean afterwards.

The reason they smell means that either you don't clean them well enough or they have special issue with their skin, anal glands, teath, ect. Make sure you get a shampoo for dogs, use fresh water to rinse, make sure you dry them throughly, and if all else fails ask your vet or groomer.

shampoo; lots of it, sometimes. Don't dump so much water on him afterwards; just enough to get the soap off. You could also spray him afterwards.
