I don't think that our interpretation of the definition of "ingrate" is in question. I think that Jon's (the poster of the other question) interpretation of the facts is what is at the center of this issue.

He pretty much states that he can ignore scientific evidence backed up with careful study simply because his eight-year old knows stuff. Good work, Jon.

An Ingrate according to the dictionaries is ungrateful. Kind of like when you dropped Monopoly money in my donations bucket.., you weren't grateful enough to put in real money.

But non the less - I disagree with my brothers and sisters. You're an ungrateful ingrate. They should be ashamed. Actually I really don't think most of these people know what an Ingrate really is.

They are most likely thinking in terms of something much more insultive, like dumb, backwards, idiotic, stupido, el-loco and along those lines. People often use words they have no clue about. Dork for example. Few people really bother to look that word up - not that it would matter to most.

I've heard so called Christians use that word - and its the same as using vulgarities. Once they know what it means and they continue using it they are then held accountable as sinning deliberately. But then there is a difference between calling someone ungrateful and a dork.

I am not sure why you are associating ingrate with atheist. I am a Christian but don't see why Any one would call an atheist an ingrate. Ungratefully about what?

No, just because you are an atheist doesn't mean you are an ingrate.

Ingrate:

1. An ungrateful person.

2. A person who shows no gratitude.

An ingrate is a person who is not grateful for any favours or help that he/she receives. It's not the same thing as an atheist. An atheist doesn't believe in a deity of any kind.

An ingrate is someone who is decidedly not grateful for the things they receive from others. The accusation is untrue, of course, since I have never been ungrateful when someone real has given me anything. And, of course, even if I was not grateful, none of those people ever took back their gift. I guess that's because they understand that giving someone something they didn't ask for but needed is not part of giving, it is all of giving. You can't put conditions on a gift and call it a gift. You give without expecting something in return.

That's right. You need to start shelling out 10% of your income to the nearest church. Don't think of it as giving away 10%, but rather getting to keep 90% of what the big guy gave ya. If you don't he has been known to bust some kneecaps. You didn't work for it after all. He let you have it, you ingrate...

Yep, everybody is an ingrate from one time to another and that includes atheists and Christians alike. Who knew we had something in common after all?

I am atheist, but I am no ingrate. I thank my parents *often* for being there for me, helping me out with me growing up, helping me with whatever I needed.

The other day, I told my parents that I thought they did a great job with me and Brother. What ingrate says that to their parents? :-) In addition, not many children say that to their parents, sadly...of ANY religion.

I am not sure about the ingrate part, but I am very saddened to hear that you are an atheist. Jesus died on the cross for you and wants to come into your life, he is just waiting for you to let him. I am saying a prayer for you. I prayed that God is sending someone your way to teach you the truth. Embrace it.
