Take the initiative. Tell him that you love his hands as you take his hand in yours. He'll be more than happy to hold your hand if he thinks it makes you feel good.
Do not take the NEGATIVE approach. If you want a guy to NEVER hold your hand, just chastise him for not doing it.
Example: "Why don't you ever hold my hand...are you ashamed to hold a girl's hand?"
Men (like women) respond to compliments.

I agree just hold his instead of waiting. When I went out on my first date with my wonderful gf to a museum, while were walking around not to far into the date, I finally decided to hold her hand. She looked at me with a smile on her face and said, "what took you so long. If you hadn't done that I was about to do that myself."
