We want to re-do our landscaping, and don't want to worry about picking up all over the large yard. Any tips on encouraging him to go in a certain spot?

In order to teach your dog to only use the bathroom in a certain part of the yard, you have to train him. To do this, every time that your dog needs to go to the bathroom take him on a leash to the spot that you want him to use. Take him to the same spot every time. After he uses the bathroom give him a treat and praise him to the skies! (very much) Continue this. After a few days/weeks (depends on the dog and how consistent that you are with this) the dog will go to the bathroom in that one spot in the yard.

At first, the dog will not go to the bathroom in the same spot each time. This is to be expected. When this happens, DO NOT SCOLD THE DOG. This is not his fault. He has not learned yet to go to the bathroom in one spot. Just ignore that he went to the bathroom in the wrong spot and dispose of the waste. The next time, try again. When the dog goes to the bathroom in the correct spot praise him and give him a treat as I said earlier. Do this every time.

Firstly, when you bring home your new four-legged guest, give him time to explore and get used to his new environment. Offer him food and water. After he finishes his meal, take your dog to an outside your home where he can relieve himself and wait. Once he finishes nature’s call in the spot you have chosen for him, praise him, pat him and show your appreciation.

For the initial few days make sure you anticipate the times the dog would need to go to toilet. It is usually after meals, after the dog wakes up and if he has been kept indoors for more than an hour or two. Take him to the same place you chose the previous day. The dog must make the connection between the spot and the defecating activity. Make sure you praise him every time he learns to use the spot.

Choose a word to indicate the act of using toilet. Even “hurry up” which we use with our children can be used as a trigger word for the dog to associate the process of going outside to do his business.

Accept the fact that accidents would occur. Do not get angry and do not use the “old” method of making the dog sniff his own mess. It will only confuse the animal. Never clean up the mess in front of the dog. He will assume that is your role in his life and he may start doing it again (just to please you).

For the next week or two, only let your dog out on a leash and only allow him to go to the spot you want...this may take a while, especially if your dog is used to having the whole yard...

The best way is to limit the amount of space on the lawn that your dog has access to. For a while, take your dog out on a leash and take to the part in which you would like for him/her to do his/her business on. Each time, give him/her a treat after they do their business. That way the dog will eventually get the idea that this is the place in which is perfect to do the duty. You can also ask your veterinarian for ideas.

You may have more luck asking your vet about what products to use for this specific problem. Or you may be able to look into a catalog called Drs. Foster & Smith. Between both avenues, you should get some helpful sprays or some helpful advice to help you with this problem.

Good luck! Enjoy your dog. Dogs as well as most any pet are gifts and treasures to us lonely humans.

Put the dog on a leash and just take him to the area you want him to use. Once he's done it there and you take him back again he'll be able to sniff his scent and will go there again. Good Luck.

Everytime your dog has to go to the bathroom take him where you want him/her to go. then after they go there give them a treat. Soon they won't need anymore treats and will be going to the bathroom where you want them to go.
