When a tooth is pulled, a couple of things can happen...
First, his other teeth can move to fill the space that has been created by the loss of the tooth. This could create problems with is bite.
Also, (and this I know from experience) when there are gaps between your teeth, you are way more likely to get food impacted in your gums. For instance, tortilla chips. And it hurts pretty bad to be jabbed in the gums with a broken tortilla chip.
The most important reason I can think of is this: When a tooth is pulled, the bone where that tooth sat will start to resorb... Disappear. Have you ever seen a person who wears dentures take their dentures out? Their faces have an almost sunken in appearance. It is because they have lost bone. This happens when there is not a tooth to support the bone...
Tell him he'll be more happy in the long run if he tries his hardest to keep as many of his own teeth as possible.
Good luck.

Yeah! To keep your teeth. I know it may be expensive, but if he doesn't have insurance tell him to sign up for what is called a dental discount plan (you can buy one off the web). This can get him up to 50% off the price of a root canal. I did it a few years ago, and it really helped me pay for it. If you start pulling teeth at this age, he wont have any left by the time he's 40. Also if he looses a tooth, all his teeth will get crooked and separated. If he refuses, have him talk to an old person with dentures so he can see how miserable life is without your real teeth. Oh, and lastly, maybe he's scared. Tell him root canals aren't like they used to be and you can do them in one or two doctor's visits now with very little pain. Root canals had a bad rep in the 70's and 80's because they were a huge deal, but with modern medicine nowadays, they are a dime a dozen and no real hassle at all. Maybe that's the reason he won't have it done.

PS No respectable doctor will pull a tooth on such a young guy anyway.

The dentist would be more than happy to pull your tooth and sell you a nice partial plate. Do you want to keep your teeth? Or have a big gap? If you don't care, have it pulled.

The whole reason for the root canal is to SAVE YOU TOOTH !

um, so that you can still chew. if you are a low class redneck from the kentucky hills then just pull it. if you hope to be able to chew your food and not get made fun of by people who are actually with it, then save the tooth.

if you have 1 tooth pulled out, all the rest become unsteady and displaced as the time goes by.
