Necessary? No.
Nice to have? YES!

In a couple years, all over the air signals will need to be digital anyway (which means your Tube TV will need an adaptor), so now is a great time to get one. Plus, you can certainly notice the difference. Just remember you will need to sign up for HD progamming to actually get HD programming on your TV. A few stations currently broadcase in HD, but not many.

Not exactly. The reason the government is mandating the transition is for money. They will be selling the analog spectrum to the highest bidder, most likely phone companies and other telecommunication groups. While the television stations move to a different frequency range the analog frequencies will be available to the highest bidder.Because of the mandate it will be necessary to upgrade.

not really, if you want the hassel of getting it installed and paying afortune for it aswell. but if you are sensible you should wait until everyones got one in a couple of years time and then get one. by that time they would have tweaked with the hardware and software a little so your picture will be the best around

Absolutely not. It's just a money making scheme, normal TVs are fine, why would you need more detail than what you already have??

It's not necessary, but I wouldn't mind having one. Some friends of mine do, and it is really neat.
