Yes, it's a good idea to give the female some privacy from all other dogs while she has the pups and the whole time they are there. Dogs don't know whether or not they are the father. One nip from a dog the size of a Malamute can kill a pup. The mom may accidentally hurt the pups trying to protect them.

Make sure you have a rail around the inside of your whelping box so the pups can't be crushed behind her. This one is a design for a Great Dane - should be perfect for you.

Just to be on the safe side, you should keep the male dog away from the mother until she has her puppies. Once she is thru and she licks them clean, then you can introduce the new puppies and it's mother to the male dog. Hopefully he will smell them and her and be okay with the whole family.

But keep a close eye on him though. Always be present when the male dog is around the newborns and mother. Some male dogs may become jealous of the newborns and try to harm them or try to kill them. Keep a watchful eye for about a month or two. After that, and the male shows no aggression towards the puppies and the mother, your male dog won't have to be watched so closely.

Good luck and have fun with your new arrivals! Pets are the best friends we humans could ever have.

DO NOT try to introduce your male to the pups and the new mom after all the pups are born.... that is a BAAAAAD idea. If you do not keep him away, she will and she won't be nice about it either.

If you like your male dog, keep him far away from the "den" and your female will slowly allow him closer and closer to the pups as they grow..... by the time they are about four weeks old she may be cool with Dad coming to visit, but don't push her unless you want a bloody mess and possibly dead dogs.

keep her alone whille she is acctually giving birth, and when she is nursing, introduce the male to the babies and if there is no aggression or any sign of dislike, the male should be ok around the puppies
