Losing weight is highly dependent on the amount of oxygen you get into the body; it is in the presence of oxygen that fat is burned. Therefore, losing weight automatically means that some sort of aerobic exercise *has* to become a regular habit in your life. So walking is as good an exercise as any - next to swimming, it is the easiest on the body.

Exercising your body, naturally requires you to breathe deeper than you normally would. As a smoker, this will feel very difficult to you, at first. However, the trick in getting past the beginning stages is in learning how to breathe properly. You must focus on your breath as you are moving - it must be slow and deep. Try breathing in and out through your nose when you begin a walk, and when your breathing becomes more labored, switch to breathing through the nose and exhaling forcefully through the mouth.

If you can maintain a regular workout for at least 6 weeks (3-4 times weekly, for at least 20 mins. at a time) it is quite possible that you will choose to quit the smoking habit somewhere along the way. Just remember, once you begin breathing in and out of the mouth (instead of the nose) in an out of control fashion - you aren't burning fat anymore. This is because your breathing has become inadequate. Erratic breathing means shallow breathing (you're filling only the upper part of the lungs). And shallow breathing means that oxygen isn't making it's way down into the cellular levels where the fat lies (remember, it is at the cellular level where fat gets converted into energy).

A significant part of weight loss is all about the quality of breath, so pace yourself. Getting started is the hardest part, of course, but if you can stick it out long enough to make it a new habit in your life - you'll be glad for having done it.

It's not the distance you walk, it's the time. Walk for at least 30 minutes every day even if it's not far. Go on a high protein, low carbohydrate diet. Eat fish, eggs, chicken, occasional lean beef or pork, low fat cottage cheese. Stay away from regular cheese, no bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, peas, beans (except green beans). No fruit and no fruit juice (it's sugar water, my dr says). Cut down on carrots and tomatoes (included ketchup). Use mustard instead of mayonnaise in recipes. Eat lots of salads, green vegetables. Salads only have one tablespoon of dressing for the whole salad. No ice cream, or other desserts. 8 glasses of water a day. No caffeine Try www.easywillpower.com for the smoking and weight loss

Buy a bike. Basically you need to move more, and if walking is bugging you, then perhaps biking will be easier. You don't have to go Tour de France, just start off slow and work up. But you need to move and eat a healthy diet. Stay away from the stuff you know is garbage and introduce more fruits and veggies.

If you swim, that's one way to lose weight. I have lung problems and can't walk very far without huffing and puffing but I still do it anyways.
