In the long run. It takes 3500 calories to burn one pound of fat. You burn roughly (depending on speed) 120 calories a mile running and 90 walking. Running would be the faster of the two ways to lose weight, but you would lose it either way in the long run.

In response to below answer, not 3500 in one day, you have to burn 3500 more than you take in over any time period.

I found the book to be very informative and easy to read.

I've lost 17 pounds in 12 days, I'm just concerned that I'm losing too much weight, too quickly. I will admit I haven't followed the guide exactly. I'm not sticking perfectly to the listed foods and meal plans (but mostly) and doing very little exercise, but the weight keeps flying off.

It clearly works and if I'd followed it exactly I think it would scare the living daylights out of me because of the amount that I'd lose. So thanks again for the information. I've never purchased anything like this before because they are usually full of trash, but 3WD has been a pleasant surprise.

Woh woh woh! 3,500 calories!? Thats over a days worth of calories for your average person, and i would NOT reccomend trying to burn that many at any one time, ever. Someone has got their facts mixed up there. (unless you aren't telling them to try and burn this at once, get back to me on that)

To answer the question, Walking essentially burns the same amount of calories as going for a jog of the same distance, however it can't really be counted as cardio, so is not overall as good for you (Unless you have a heart condition that can worsen with extended cardio exercise)

I'm not so sure that 3 miles a day is going to help you, as personally i walk at least 4-6 every day (not including the days where i actually manage to catch a bus, but thats rare) and on my current intake of calories (3,000-3,500 max) i'm still managing to consistantly gain weight, however PERSONALLY, that is my goal, and its not going on in the form of Fat.

Anyway, the answer to your question, as stated is:

It burns the same amount of calories as a Jog of the same distance

it depends on how fast you walk. fast walking is better than running slow since fast walking puts your body in an awkward position it's not used to which makes your body work harder and burn more calories than walking normal or running slow. so if you don't want to run fast, then walk fast is your best option.

Walking will do it, you'll just have to walk more than if you chose to run - and you won't wreck your knees.
