Fat burning foods are foods that burn more calories than the calorie content of the foods itself. The secret to losing weight is to eat and drink the right kinds of foods until you are full and satisfied. If you skip meals and foods, it will slow your metabolism and your health will deteriorate. There are certain foods which actually burn more fat than the calorie content of the food itself. These fat burning foods or so called negative calorie foods are natural plant foods.
Foods that burn fat: Fruits rich in vitamin C like limes, lemons, oranges, grapefruit and tangerines have fat burning properties so they may be called as FAT BURNING FOODS of FAT BURNERS. Some of the other fat burning foods are asparagus, beet root, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, apple, blueberries, and watermelon. If you eat these fat burning foods and do some exercise, it will boost your metabolism and burn calories (fat) at a faster rate for several hours even after exercise. Full list of the fat burning foods is available.
A recent research reports that calcium in dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt can boost weight loss by increasing fat breakdown in fat cells. Michael Zemel, Professor of Nutrition and Medicine at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville reports (Obesity Research, April 2004; vol 12; pp 582-590.), "If you compare a dairy-rich versus a dairy-poor diet you can nearly double the rate of weight and fat loss with the same level of calorie restriction." Dairy products may therefore be termed as fat burning foods. His research has shown that eating 3-4 servings of dairy products a day is more effective at enhancing weight loss efforts than calcium supplementation alone. So eat dairy products that act as fat burners.
Note that in order to lose weight you have to burn more calories than you consume. This can be done by eating fat burning foods. This will help your body burning up the excessive stored fat.

I'd agree with the answers posted thus far. I have heard anecdotal evidence that spicy foods increase one's metabolism. In addition, caffeine and green tea have been shown to kick start it. Milk / dairy products has been shown to be an effective fat burner as well.
I should caution you not too get too terribly excited about the results. The amount that it actually kicks it up is fairly minimal... perhaps you'll burn an extra 25 - 50 calories a day. Remember that 3500 calories equals one pound, so keep this in mind. Sure every little bit helps, but these foods aren't miracles that'll replace hard work and a sensible diet plan.

There aren't actually specific types of food that speed up metabolism even though some food and drinks are rumored to do so. To speed up your metabolism, instead of eating three meals a day, you should eat 5-6 smaller meals.

Iced or chilled water will lower the body's core temperature and force it to expend energy raising it again. Drink with every meal (preferably five small meals a day) and in between to lose weight.
Caffiene will increase the body's metabolic rate and substances such as l-carnite may increase the efficiency of the metabolic system.
Finding a healthy outdoor exercise you enjoy and combining this with plenty of water as above is the way to go for a healthy metabolism and weight control - diet by itself will not work long term and keep you healthy at the same time.

Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is a measure of physiological and biochemical activity keeping you alive. It is usually measured in terms of oxygen consumption since the oxygen you take in is used to respire glucose to provide energy to drive the metabolic processes. The BMR is sometimes called Resting Metabolic Rate because the measurement is made when you are not doing anything other than keeping alive.
Dietary influences upon metabolic rate are unimportant, but exercise dramatically increases the rate. You can't eat or not eat anything that has any significant effect upon metabolic rate (unless you starve - a bad idea).
Your metabolic rate is adjusted automatically in response to energy demand usually because of exercise/physical activity.
The only safe way to reduce body weight is to reduce the amount of energy-food (fat, starch & sugar) in a healthy, balanced diet. Exercise will contribute to weight loss (& have many other significant benefits) but it is eating less energy-food that is the most important.

Apples and ginger are supposed to speed up your metabolism, as is chilli.
Caffeine shouldn't be used, it may speed your metabolism but it also dehydrates you, eventually causing water retention so is kind of pointless...

I don't know about specific foods, but small, frequent meals can jump start your metabolism. Rather than eating large meals at breakfast, lunch and dinner, try smaller meals every two hours.
