I want to build a new home (which I have never done before) and want to bring a designer in at the begining, to work with the contractor doing the building so that the designer can help me decide on things like flooring, counter tops etc. What is the best way to do this, is it possible to find someone who does both.

The person who brings designers and contractors together is called a project manager.

I once heard the description of a project manager: one who conducts a 300 piece orchestra where everyone has a different set of sheet music.

I don't see the problem.

You hire the designer give her your ideas. She and the contractor produces the design or plan.

You, her and contractor get together and discuss what the plans will be. You and the designer go and pick the finishes and contractor installs them. By the way, do some shopping on finishes you can save a lot of money by price shopping. I have found a lot of great deals on Internet, items I cant even find locally.

I am a designer who works with contractors all the time. I really have never had a problem with contractors. Sometimes they tell me it cant be done and we find another solution.

we do this all the time. the trick is to have the designer do all their pre work and make the notes on the plans so the contractor knows ahead of time what he can expect!

it runs smoother if u do this and keep the 2 parties apart until framing is done. then bring in designer make changes if needed but shouldnt have to, and have the 2 meet again before and after changes or before and after rough in if no changes needed.

there is no reason why u cant have everything laid out and figured before starting the bid process.

Hire a design/build firm. This type of builder has its own design staff to work with you. Because the builder and designer work for the same company, they are used to working together and communicating directly. This is much better than trying to match up two different individuals, and companies, who may be able to work together effectively.
