I know a little bit about them. Do you have a specific question?

I remember from music class in grade school that spirituals were songs that were sad in nature and that the ones that had a more light-hearted quality were called Jubilees. Sometimes the songs had hidden messages in them for people who were trying to escape north on the underground railroad. Like if a song had a line in it about a drinking gourd, it meant to use the Big Dipper constellation and the North Star to guide them north.
