The shaved top of a cleric's head is called a tonsure.

The Greeks and Romans used tonsures as a badge of slavery.

Early monks adopted this practice to show that they belonged totally to God.

Towards the end of the fifth, or beginning of the sixth, century, the custom passed over to the secular clergy.

With love in Christ.

the real answer is actually that its symbolic of ridding themselves of vanity and worldly ways. its another Catholic tradition that sure isnt neccessary, but makes them feel more humble.

God must just shake His head and smile warmly at the darlings.

It's a symbol of their detachment from vanity and earthly (i.e. sinful) fashion. The shape of the tonsure also denoted different monastic orders and occasionally ranks within those orders.
