With only as much information as the age of the child allows her to understand. Without knowing the age, it's hard to answer this question precisely. I read the question differently from others...that you are raising your sister because mom is out of the picutre. If something violent or criminal happened to your mother, she obviously doesn't need all the gory details, especially if she's only 5. A 12 yr old still doesn't need every sordid detail, but is in a better position to understand that sometimes adults make bad decisions or that we can't always make sense of the premature death of a loved one.

If OTOH your father raped you as others have interpreted, you need to contact the authorities immediately start a criminal invesitgation. Contact a counsellor to help you decide the best time & way to inform your daughter.

I gather from your question that this is a case of sexual abuse, if I am wrong please elaborate. If it is and all has been resolved, meaning the father is in jail, I would not tell her until it was necessary. Imagine how emotionally damaging it could be to her if you tell her while she is still too young. I would wait until she is an adult or at the earliest 16 so she can understand, but 16 may still be too young. This is a difficult thing to answer with the limited details you provide, but I've given you an answer based on what I understand to be the problem. Please post more details and I will change my answer accordingly. Or IM me and I will try to help you.

How can she be a daughter and a sister? If she is a sister, why was she ever told a lie in the first place? She should be told ASAP

OMG!

Ok. My sons father found out when he was 30 that he was adopted and it added on to his lifelong problems and made him realize why he felt out of place. This child needs to be told immediately, in a safe environment that you are her sister and took custody for whatever reason. As long as you think she can handle it, I would tell her the entire truth of how and why. My feelings are that family secrets can kill family. It really helped make my sons fathers life miserable.

I would speak to a counsellor who specializes in adopted children. Meet with him or her and suss out what, exactly, your sister should or needs to know. Be sensitive, and realize that at her young age she may not fully be able to grasp the implications of her world unravelling. GL! Blessed be.
