For those living in a democracy, isn't it supposed to be us who tell them what we want, not the other way around? So could we overturn the DCMA and regain the right to make backup copies and convert encrypted files into different formats if we want to?

i wholeheartedly agree. we have the right to do whatever we wish (except any form of distribution) with what we legally purchased. I say let us have DRM free music (and videos also; like itunes TV shows and music videos).

BTW, http://allofmp3.com/ has cheap downloads w/o drm

Do you really believe that people use the techonology to make backup copies of their OWN CDs? Well, if every did, there'll be no need for this new encryption?
Yes we do live in a democracy, but that doesn't mean we make the rules. When has that ever been true?

Anyway, soon enough someone will come up with a clever workaround. Somebody always does.

Are you kidding? With all the problems this country faces right now, contacting elected Representatives about the right to overturn copyrighted music so you can listen to it on your computer instead of buying a CD is about the last thing on their minds.

wow, we have 2489 dead in Iraq and 15,000 wounded and Iraq will cost working class tax payers $2 trillion over the next 10 years and you want what? Free Music?
The Artist that made the Music to sell as his property has rights to gain from his art. It's called Market forces.
BTW, I get all my Music at the Library, free. I also listen to the FM Radio free.
