Yes- for any medication or herb it is very possible to overdose. If you have overdosed, you need to see a doctor right away. Symptoms of a melatonin overdose may include headache, drowsiness, and upset stomach.

It is possible to overdose on ANYTHING - even water. Melatonin is a great sleep aid, but check with your homeopath or the staff at the store where you are buying it about recommended dosages. If you do not get a clear answer, check with your Physician. Other sleep aids you might want to try are chamomile (which I'm pretty sure you've already tried) and the one that worked for me - a high-protein snack right before bed. Your body gets busy processing the food and it makes you sleepy. My favorite is about three oz of cheddar cheese with celery.

Is melatonin safe?
Melatonin is one of the least toxic substances known. People have taken as much as 6 grams (600 to 3000 times the normal dosage) of the substance in carefully monitored studies with no sign of toxicity. Only four complaints regarding melatonin have been report to the FDA (USA's Food and Drug Administration). The only consistent side effect of high doses has been drowsiness and a slower reaction time. In the most extensive clinical trial to date a high dose of 75 milligrams of melatonin per day was given to 1400 women in the Netherlands for up to four years with no ill effects. The FDA reports that in the more than two years melatonin has been available for sale over-the-counter in the United States, no alarming side effects have been reported

Melatonin is a hormone. As we get older we have less of it in our bodies. When young you shouldn't even need it to get to sleep because your body has enough. So I think if your young and use it anyways you should be careful.

Barry White said it best:
"Too much of ANYTHING is not good for you baby..."
And so did Tailor Daine in a an early 90's remake of the song.
