Well as we all know, Dr. Jeffrey suggestion of eradicating world poverty is great but, there is one slight problem. Well actually one big problem. To help many of these third world countries requires money and lots of it. To rebuild infrastructure, hospital, schools, all require money. Where would we get this money from? Sure, you have private donations to pitch in but, a majority of the world just doesn't give a crap about world hunger. Now if you could, then that would be amazing but, look at Africa. Nearly the entire population has AIDS and is poor. Well, this may sound cruel but, face it. There is no hope for Africa. Billions would be needed to fund mass projects to educate the pratice of safe sex. Which by the way doesn't occur over there. Most of the Africans live in the wild. You know how hard it is to set up a modern civilization?? Land Lines would have to be placed everywhere for thousands of miles. What about those in the desert?

We would have to find a way to bring in water to them. And with the Sahara desert reaching extreme tempartures, I seriously doubt that anything we have close right now would work out there.

Electricity, how would we get that out in the desert. That would require underground lines but, that is suicide to try and do that. The Sahara desert is expanding like every year!! I'm not sure by how much, but it is expanding ever so slowly.

So this world poverty undertaking is just way to big. I can go on and on about just one continent Africa. Just think of all the other nations out there we would have to worry about. And some of these countries don't even have governments!!!

Until my last breath, I will not give up hope that this world will be a better place.

Until my last neuron fires, I will be working to design the very best solutions and systems, even if no one yet has implemented them

That is fine. But I disagree with your premise that all is lost with Africa and that money is the solution. Money has never been the solution- knowledge and the erradication of ignorance is the central challenge.

The war on terror is not money, it is a battle of ideas- good and bad. The same applies to poverty. Poverty is first and foremost a battle of changing attitudes. You may disagree, but everything you see around you was once an idea on a piece of paper.

Our constitutions are ideas. Our technology are ideas. The solution for Africa is to reform the African Union as an overall government capable of solving the 53+ colonial map of African nations, none of which can solve problems on their own.

I don't think that it is impossible. It wouldn't be easy. If you had experts look at the problems presented in each country, and come up with a definite plan of action on how to best harness their natural and human resources, educate the population, and forgive their debt, who knows what we could achieve. If you give people hope for a different future I don't think we can even estimate how hard they will work to achieve it.
Naive maybe, but I would prefer to try something than just give up on them all together.
HIV/AIDS is no longer an immediate death sentence in developed countries because of access to drugs and health care. If drug companies released their patents to generic drug companies, cheaper drugs could be made that would enable the average African living with HIV to follow a drug regiment that would prolong their lifetimes. Microbicides could be used to prevent the transmission of HIV to sexual partners, and if the church and governments would advocate the use of condoms and sex education instead of celibacy, abstinence (which we all know won't happen) perhaps we could help to stop the spread of the HIV.

you are right.its impossible to stop world poverty in third world countrys, but we can help it! even if we cant save all the people from illnesses such as aids and dehidration, but we CAN help some!instead of giving up,we should help as many of the people that we can by giving aid.we should not abandon our fellow humans just because we cant help um all! by saving even a quarter of the lives of the people in africa, were still saving lives!everyone has a right to life,we should give that right to as many people as we can!by leaving them,we are giving them a death wish they cant escape!a little goes a long way over there!and saving some lives is better than not saing any at all!

Have you ever wondered about the reason of our existence? Have you ever wondered why we die, and where we go after death? What will happen to us in the end? Have you ever asked yourself why God made the earth and all that is in it under man’s dominion? Why were the night and the day, and the sun and the moon created? What are we supposed to do during our lifetime? Were we created just to eat, drink, and enjoy ourselves before we die? As one poet put it:
“I do not know whence I have come.
I saw my feet walking on the road.
As they please I go and stop.
What am I doing here?
How did the road find me?
I do not know! I do not know! I do not know! ”

God has emphasized in many verses of the Qur’an that He did not create us without purpose. He said: “What! Do you think that I created you simply in jest? And that you would not be returned to Me?” (23:115) He also said: “What! Does man think that he will be left to roam at his will?” (75:36) In addition, He said: “Do people think that they will be left to say: “We believe,” and they will not be held accountable?” (29:2)
Indeed, God Has created human beings for a purpose and with a purpose: TO WORSHIP HIM ALONE (Monotheism). He said: “I have not created the Jinn and humankind except only to worship Me. I don't require provision or feeding from them. Surely Allah is the All-provider, the Possessor of all strength, the Firm.” (51:56-58) In fact, all prophets told their people to worship God alone (Monotheism) and shun worshipping His creation (Paganism). God said: “I assuredly sent among every people a messenger with the command: Worship Allah and avoid worshipping false gods.” (16:36)
Prophet Abraham, for example, believed in One God, who had no partner. Anyone who holds a different understanding of God than this has contradicted the religion of Abraham and follows falsehood. God says in the Qur’an: “Those who reject the religion of Abraham make fools of themselves.” (2:130)
Prophet Jesus was reported in the Gospels to have said: “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only’.” (Luke 4:8)
Prophet Jacob also said (in the Qur'an) to his people: “Indeed, those which you worship besides Allah are only names that you and your forefathers have established, for which Allah has sent down no authority. The command belongs only to Allah. He has commanded that you worship none but Him. That is the right religion, but most people do not understand.” (12:40)

Real happiness and peace can be ONLY found in submitting to the commands of the Creator and the Sustainer of this world. God has said in the Qur’an: (Truly, in remembering God do hearts find rest.)
(Qur’an, 13:28)

On the other hand, the one who turns away from the Qur’an will have a life of hardship in this world. God has said:
(But whoever turns away from the Qur’an, he will have a hard life, and We will raise him up blind on the Day of Judgment.) (Qur’an, 20:124)
This may explain why some people commit suicide while they enjoy the material comfort money can buy. For example, look at Cat Stevens (now Yusuf Islam), formerly a famous pop singer who used to earn sometimes more than $150,000 a night. After he converted to Islam, he found true happiness and peace, which he had not found in material success.

Skip the charities. Bring in businesses. Eco-tourism is popular. You could build hotels and restaurants to provide jobs, tour guides would make money, gift shops of locally made products, jobs would pay taxes to build roads. Who ever puts up a building would also put in a well...............

Jeffrey Sachs may seem to be a nice man and all, but if you delve deep, you will discover he is a man with far too simplistic ideas and one who constantly plays the sympathy card.
