Never heard of plucking a watermelon. Some people call picking watermelons, pulling them. That is because they are being pulled from the vine. Is that maybe what you mean?

I think your a bit mixed up. It's called plugging a watermelon. People do that to see if a melon is ripe enough to eat.

I have no idea. Thumping a watermelon is supposed to produce a sound that tells you whether it's ripe enough to eat.
