Memory is of two types. 1)recent memory that is lost with stress alcohol lack of attention etc. 2)remote memory --that is conducive to long lasting rememberance.
Memory depends upon three factors a)impression---the total concept, comprehension, and mental picture(we remember things which we understand) b)repetition---(the number of times we read or encounter a concept) and c)association---relation of one thing to other.
Chilhood events have all these factors. Moreover reception in our brain(mind) can be compared to a coating of cement.During childhood the cement coat is fresh and the impression is long lasting.

Childhood was a precious time, and dinner is regular. We remember our childhood because it's over, and how we wish we could go back. We don't remember dinner, because it happens everyday.

It is because childhood is the most wonderful phase of or lives.childhood is irreversible and hence the memories haunt us forever wheras a dinner can be cooked again and is hence relatively unimportant or mundane.

Depending on your age,it may be called short term memory loss. I have found people that has open heart surgery also suffer from short term loss. But if it none of the above, it's just plain old forgetfulness.

You don't remember what you had a particular night for dinner as a child, i"m sure.. that was trivial, as was last night's dinner! but the big memories, we treasure.. that's from last year, last night or from our childhood.

Childhood is a dramatic time, as we are learning things while we are growing up.
Dinner was pot roast. Left over pot roast.
