Corn is hard for dogs to digest, so usually it just passes through without any real benefits for the dog who ate it. Low quality foods use many different types of corns as fillers (fillers are useless and contribute to a lot more poop). I avoid feeding my dogs corn, but if I have corn, I'll give them just a little as a treat since it won't kill them; it's just not healthy for them.

Corn is an extremely common ingredient in dog foods and dog treats, so yes, it's safe.

That said, it's not one of the better things for dogs to eat, and is found most frequently in lower quality dog foods and less frequently in higher quality dog foods.

There was a terrible incident recently with Diamond Dog food manufacturer where corn affected by aflatoxin made it into the dog food and more than 70 confirmed dogs (who knows how many more) died after eating the food. Properly handled and inspected corn does not have this effect.

Occasionally giving your dog corn to eat is perfectly safe as long as your dog tolerates it well. If corn makes your dog gassy or have bad poops, that's how you'd know to skip corn for your dog. Otherwise, yes, it's safe.
