Secularism has to do with things that are not of religion. Such as eating, sleeping, etc. Every religious person has a secular life. You can't function in any society without secularism. You can involve a personal spiritual function to these secular events, but they remain secular. People who are not religious or who don't practice the same religion as you, still do them.

This IS a confusing word and it does deal directly with religion. Primarily you'll hear "based on secular findings" or "Should this be practiced in a religious or secular environment?" somehitng like that. It means "non-religious" BUT you can have secular Clergy, those who practice their religion, but abstain from vows of poverty, etc. In some contexts it's "Wordly" (secular) vs. "Spiritual" religious. I always thought that it WAS another religion (based on Christian findings blah blah, but the Jewish, Muslim and Secular findings believe something else!) ha ha I felt pretty stupid when I found out, BTW it wasn't that long ago and I'm 45!

secularism = separation of religion and state.

If a country is Secular, it means the constitution guarantees:

1) that no govt. decision will ever be based on religion or religious ideas, because that means one religious style of thinking will get laws made in their style, whereas a whole bunch of citizens might be practising another religion (with totally different ideas).

2) as a result of this rule (i.e. religion-free govt.) it means the govt. cannot tell you what to do in your religious life...it means freedom of religion to everybody, incl. aethists (non-religious)

So - India and Germany are 2 examples of a Secular State. You can follow any religion you want in these two lands, and all laws made by the govt. have to be acceptable to all citizens, no matter which religion they follow.

Saudi Arabia or Pakistan are examples of non-secular states. In these countries, you better be muslim or get out (or have less rights). A lot of the laws that are passed are based on their religious ideals, and they are known officially as "the Islamic Republic of...whatever".
