Don't be afraid sweetheart.... think positive and enjoy your trip. It will be a whole new world that you will see in the air and not on the ground. The sensation you will feel on takeoff will give you a thrill and be better then carnival rides you've been on. So enjoy the trip your about to take and give grandma a big hug for me.

There is a big difference in 'fear of flying' and 'phobia of flying'.
If you only fear it, don't worry after an hour up in the sky the fear will be gone. It's the unknown that we fear. However if it's a phobia, you have your work cut out for you.
Most everything you will experience will be similar to something else you can relate to.
Everyone has already told you it's safe, and it is one of the safest ways to travel. Just think of it as a big bus when you get on (closer to truth than fiction).
Just before take off the flight attendant will tell you what to do during an emergency, you will notice that most people aren't ignoring the speech... that's because they have flown enough to know the speech by heart. You should listen, think of it like being a fire drill in school. You did many fire drills, but did your school ever have a fire. Odds are no, but you were prepared just in case.
The plane will back out of the gate and drive to the runway. Once he reaches the runway and is given the green light it will sound and feel like a hot rod fixing to drag... you will hear the engines reeve up, and the pilot will put the peddle to the metal. After a short piece of track... it will all the sudden become as smooth as silk... you just left the hot rod on the track and now sailing in a caddy down a smooth highway.
During take off and landing your ears may plug up. Don't worry it's just the change in pressure. If you yawn or chew a piece of gum it will go away.
Sometimes you will hit a bit of turbulence, this is nothing to worry about... think of it as driving over a bad road with pot holes. The fasten seat belt light may come on, and you might here an announcement for everyone one to return to their seat. This is nothing to worry about, they just don't want you to fall and get hurt.
Landing will be the exciting part, for my now, you are starting to feel good about flying. The landing will be like returning to the hot rod at the end of the race. You will feel a slight thud when the tires touch, then the engines will get loud again, with in seconds you will be driving to the gate.
Now you will be ready to say I DID IT!!!
If you are dealing with a real phobia, let the flight attendant know how bad your fear really is. They won't think bad of you, a lot of people have this fear, and they will be more than willing to help you through it. Also you will find the people sitting next to you will most likely be supportive too.
Now go and have fun with grandma!

flying is no different than riding in a car in fact sometimes a ride in a car is rougher than a ride in an airplane.
First during the takeoff you will hear the engines of the airplane going a little loud and then you will feel the airplane getting off the ground and it will start pitching up as it gains altittude and when it is high enough you will be able to see the clouds and a beautiful scenery and sometimes there might be a little bit of turbulence, but it is no rougher than a bumpy ride in a car. After that the flight attendant will say that they are about to land and you have to put on your seatbelt and when the airplane lands you will feel a little bumb and then the engines again going a bit loud, but after that the airplane will slow down until it stops.
d'ont worry you will be fine
good luck.

I'm not the wrold's best flyer either and I wish I could get over it too.
What I do is plug myself into the radio as soon as I board and try and lose myself in the music. I read the inflight magazine and chat non stop to anyone who will listen, while I eat packet after packet of nuts.
I go the toilet a few times to kill some time and read a book, do a crossword, anything but nothing so you have to listen to the (perfectly normal) noises the aircraft is making.
Sorry, Savannah - this is a pretty lame answer - I'm not sure what the solution is - but you'll be fine!

Savannah;
I fly gov. planes and the best ways that I know to tell ya is either take Dramamien (a motion sickness med.) which will make you drowsy or listen to your favorite music on the I POD. Either way its not that bad to be afraid of. Make sure you get a seat in the isle so your not next to the window. I have a baby niece that just refuses to fly. But she says she will do anything her Uncle asks her. I have her convinced to fly because she knows what my line of work is and I have told her from experience how it will feel flying. Of course gov. planes are different than civ. planes. Civilian planes are a smooth and gradual take off. Government planes here have to do what they call Combat Take Offs. Straight up and alot of banks. Believe me, you will enjoy this flight. I have flown civ. airlines alot too. Its no problem. If you have any more questions about it or still feel unconvinced email me. I will be happy to discuss your uneasiness about flying.

Maybe we speak about fly. I wish to fly.
Will be ok. If I am into an airplane and the flight attendants say me: we crush, I will don't believe. :) the airlines is safe and if you can, have a new experience: choices the business class or first class and relax with hers services (music, Internet and other)
Airplanes is the ___most safe__ transportation.
Will be cool. The flight attendants will smile you.

i used to get scared, too. It's okay. They say the safest way to travel is to fly. I have racked up over 50,000 frequent flier miles in the past 12 months. No sweat.

I can't help you with your fears but I can tell you flying is safer than driving a car. You just fear the unknown is all, once you fly you get over the fear.

If God had meant you to fly, He would have given you wings!
I'm with you. Given the choice, I will not fly.
Do you have a choice? Can you take the bus? Train?
Otherwise, just bite the bullet -- and, who knows? You may enjoy flying!
