there's a number of causes... circulation, carpal tunnel etc. Do you have diabetes? have you injured your hand lately? is there a problem with your neck (it can impinge on the nerve to your hand).
See your doctor, don't try to treat it yourself, you could make it worse.

you most likely have a problem with the neck section of the spinal cord. see your gp.

neuropathy...possibly carpel tunnel syndrome
Seriousness....underlying cause may be serious...diabetes, etc. can cause this
