So I'm planning on picking up a 2001 Jeep Cherokee with 80k miles, and I'm a bit concerned with reliability. I've researched and it's either love or hate this thing.

I love the design, not having all these stupid gadgets and something I can use for my daily commute(70mi +/day).

My question for you Cherokee owners, is this reliable? Can I use this car without too much hassle other than basic maintanence and such? Please any buying advice? Thanks!

I own a 2000 Cherokee and a 1995 YJ Wrangler. The Cherokee will get decent, but not great, gas mileage. Also, the only problem with the Cherokee is the transmission. They tend to need overhaul before your engine will. If it is possible, take the Cherokee to a Trans shop before you purchase it and have them do a free check. Tell them you are looking to buy, and want to make sure the trans has been cycled over the years (what I mean by cycled is that the filter and fluids have been changed about every 15,000, they will be able to tell easily).Other than that they are comfortable vehicles, and good engines.

P.S. As there are a ton of parts out there for Jeep vehicles, they are very expensive. A major overhaul on the drivetrain can run you upwards of 2 to 3 thousand for a trans and 4 to 5 for an engine. If this is a long term investment, look into an extended warranty if available. Good Luck.

I bought a 87 jeep Cherokee last fall, I paid $450 for it, put about $100 on the engine (pcv valve need to be replaced, figured I'd clean up the head a little while I was in there) I don't think the previous owner even had changed the oil in the five years he had it. I ran like a top with new plugs and rotor. Drove it all winter, and it started every day, even at minus 30! We sold it this spring for what we put into it. They are very reliable vehicles, and very eay to work on. Parts from just about any year will fit the other years, so parts aren't expensive. Get the in-line Six motor, and a manual transmission. I have seen these with over 400,000 Kms on them, 300,000 + miles. They do drink more than a car, but they are much more fun!

Being a long time Jeep owner, I can tell you they are reliable. Like anything else it will have occasional problems. You are right, Jeeps are a love/hate vehicle. The only problems I had with my 93 Cherokee and my 98 Grand Cherokee was they ALL devlop a leak between the transmission and transfer case. Have the seal replaced when it needs it. Other problem - fuel pumps. Chrysler (makes Jeep) has had a problem for a LONG time with there electric in tank fuel pumps. Other than that, regular maintenance will keep you a happy Jeep owner for a long time to come.
Good luck!

I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport that I bought in November 2000. The only thing I've ever done to it was oil change and replace the tires, brakes and have a front end alignment which are all standard maintenance issues. I just replaced two tires that were on it when I originally bought it and they had 105,570 miles on them. I've never had any problems with my Jeep except when I didn't screw the gas cap on good and the service engine light came on for a couple of days. Once the air worked it's way out the light went off and never had any other problems. Mine is paid for now and I plan to keep it forever.

Pretty much! I have a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee"Limited Edition". I purchased it with 108k miles. I Love It! Had it for 3 years, no major problems.I am a victim of hurricane "KATRINA" and I have traveled a lot with it. It is a very reliable vehicle! I will not ever get rid of it!I also plan to get another vehicle but I will not sell it to anyone. Simply because it hasn't let me down when I really needed it.

I have owned 4 Grand Cherokees and they were all great transportation. Keep the tires rotated for a smooth ride--along with other minimal maintenance. It worked for me. I bought 2 new and 2 used. The one I have now is also a 2001 and has just over 100K miles. I drove the last 3 all past 175K.

I LOVE MY CHEROKEE !!
That said, it is an older model than you are after, mine-an '86/V6
has been a pure joy & I can't see ever switching-
I drive & drive & drive & drive....get the picture..
Have a mechanic look over whatever ya are picking up-even make him/her do a quick road test that includes a quick off-road trial-
Remember, traditionally things do start going out after a few years-alot of the 10+ year old dependable used cars have had alot of minor/mid-level repairs-that is pretty average-
Keep your fluids & air up---lube-n'-oil changes regularly...and don't be cheap-no bargan basement stuff eh-
you should be 'converted' in no time...:)
