i think once any amnesty like this is over... if you are caught... you are simply going equipt to murder... you should serve at least a minimum 5 years... Plus one year for every inch of the blade, including the handle... regardless of age... everyone knows how serious knife crime is... from 5 years old to pensioners...

the punishment should fit...

your turn... what would you do!

i'd just like to add that... all to often we do allow leaway with, repect too rehabillitation. only for one so called rehabillitated offender, to repeat his crime... often to a more extreme level...

yes the british justice system stinks.... quite right... and certain individuals should be absolved of all right to the human rights act... this is another place where, disregard for anothers liberty to life... is flouted, and then... i call it... rewarded with a lenient sentence... so build a few bigger jails... a small amount on the tax bill, for the peace of mind of safety... it's not to much to ask... asbo's are a ridiculous waste of money... they don't work... kids celebrate them like a trophy! (oh! how many asbo's you got... der i got 10... what you got...11... yeah there who's asbo king... i here it everyday... the writing is also on the wall so to speak, grafitti near my home ad states ****** is asbo king... this i tell you is and 11 year old!
The law... too soft for too long!

Mr. Hmmm sounds like a sensible chap. Simply carrying a knife is not wrong using it to threaten or harm someone is wrong. The knife amnesty is a farce to make it look like the government are doing something about knife crime when in fact their efforts are, as I'm sure they are aware, completely futile. The only knives going in those amnesty boxes will be either those found by the mothers of for example, teenage sons who are scared or those knives which have just been used to commit an offence and the criminal can then eaily dispose of the evidence.

A knife has other uses than commiting an offence. In the countryside, a knife can be essential to survival (cutting up turf to build a fire for example or gutting a fish). In an urban setting they can be used for for example, opening packaging etc.

Knife crime is serious but education is the answer. Putting people in prison is expensive and can help them to learn more about criminal life rather than rehabilitating them.

I think you are right to some extent, but i think maybe some of these kids carry a knife because of how street culture has become, i reckon some of these kids feel like they need to carry a knife out with them now for protection. It is a difficult one. I also think that this knife amnesty is making the knife culture worse, young people like to rebel, and with all the news on the TV about knife crime, it makes kids want to do it even more. I remember what i was like, the more you try and stop kids from doing something the more popular it becomes. It is really going to be difficult to stop this new culture. I think it is just going to get alot worse, prison sentence don;t scare people away from doing thing, they don't think they will be caught.

Carrying a knife with a blade under three inches should warrant a caution and perhaps confiscation depending on circumstances. Carrying a knife with a blade over three inches should warrant a 1 year sentence (unless you have just purchased it and are carrying it home). Using a knife to threaten a person should warrant a 5 year sentence. And using a knife to injure a person, or worse, should warrant a minimum of 20 years. This is in my humble opinion of course...

I think there should definately be mandatory custodial sentences for anyone caught with a knive - don't think the prison service could handle 5 years for everyone who is caught carrying knives but something has to be done cos it's getting right out of hand. Maybe 2 years for carrying a knive - Police officers should have metal detectors to search people who hide their knives in places that the Police can not reach.

i completely agree with victoria b, in that prison does nothing to stop crime once the people are out. a stupendous amount of people re-offend when they get out of prison because prison lifestyle encourages, not prevents crime. governments constantly fail to tackle to root of the problem, instead offering superficial solutions. i do think people should be locked up for murder, serious assault etc but whilst in prison they need to be educated, counselled and helped. a huge cause of crime is inequality, poverty and social exclusion. perhaps if the government spent more money on youth projects, youth clubs and rehabilitastion instead of asbo's and more police we might see an improvement.

(however must point out that i think the knife amnesty is an excellent idea...makiing them harder to get hold of could also be a possibility..)

Good idea dude, I'd vote for you, the little shits should have to earn their keep though, I get taxed enough as it is and I think they should have to wade through refuse to find recyclables instead of sitting around playing playstation.

And yes, prison for carrying a knife, don't know if you've noticed the correlation between violent crime levels and a stupid constitution that allows red necks to carry guns etc.

*******.

well personally the sentences should be for anyone carrying from 10 to old age. and its just another excuse to arrest the inocent just like the terrorism act its anothe waste of money and time. police resources are stretched arestting car drivers at the moment so nothing will be done and what about the proffesinals like chefs etc.
