No...they went into the foxholes as atheists but exited them, if they were lucky enough to do so, with a different perspective.

The first sentence is incorrect. And I have to disagree with the question. There is no connection with intelligence and religion. There are different levels of intellect amongst religious and athiests. There are both religious and athiest serving in combat roles right now in Iraq.

I don't understand people who say that because what would you rather believe in a fox hole that god put you in the fox hole and their is nothing you can do about it so you you might as well sit back and do nothing or you got your self in here so you can get your self out their is no god only you and its up to you to get out. I know what I would believe and it's not god so I would find a way out of the fox hole whilst the theists sit there talking to themselves.

No it's because when their life is on the line they suddenly rely on God to save them...which is great if they keep the faith; but, so many forget the one that saved them as soon as they get out of trouble and return to their old ways and unbelief.
