OK, if you were to just eat your choice of calories up to 1200 you need to consider some things. Yes, you will lose weight, but you may gain body fat.

Take pies for example. They contain about 400 calories. You could eat 3 pies per day and be within 1200 calories. But, what you need to consider is that there is about 30g of fat in each pie so you will be consuming 90g fat. Carbs is about 120g, protein is 60g. In all you can't get all your nutrients so it's not a great diet.

If you want to do this it is for life so you need to totally change your way of eating and exercising. This is not a diet rather than a healthy eating plan for life. So no more talking diet cause it means time limit. Stop making some major mistakes wake up earlier and get active earlier your metabolism is sluggish and needs to be woken up this is half your problem.

Here are the golden rules:
Initially cut down to 1200 calories.
Exercise 6 times per week for 1 hours a day. Do three weight sessions and three cardio sessions. No gym involved.
Don't eat carbs after 4pm, never eat carbs within 2 hours of exercise or within 1 hour of exercise.
Drink 3 litres of water per day. You can have a green tea at the end of the day.
Limit your fruit in take to 2 pieces per day.
Never eat dinner after 6pm.
Adopt of low GI eating plan this is sustainable for life!
Make low fat dairy choices

Follow this menu plan as a suggestion:
Breakfast 7am - 1 cup hot water w lemon
20 minutes later have a bowel of oats w water (no honey) OR
fruit salad w low GI soy yogurt
Snack 10am - pear or apple (both low GI)
Lunch 12.30pm - multigrain sandwich w 50g tuna & salad (no butter)
Snack 3pm - low GI yogurt OR skim berry smoothie (no honey or banana) plenty of ice, 1/2 cup skim milk & 1/4 cup yogurt
Dinner 5.30pm - 120g grilled lean meat/fish/prawns/tofu patties (not fried) w spinach salad & mixed vegies (no whites, carbs) OR 3 egg white/soy omlette with ham, cheese and tomato
Snack - 1 scoop of low cal low fat ice cream (if hungry)

Exercise is must be intense. Refer to www.bodybuilding.com for your weights routine. Never do weights two consecutive days have a cardio day in between.

Cardio needs to include running, go hard up stair wells and cycling. You get the most benefits from exercise when your body is totally fatigued and this is when you see changes.

To maintain you can increase calories to 1500 and reduce exercise sessions to 3-4 times per week. If weight creeps up again due to holiday period etc.. go back to 1200 cal and 6 sessions again.

Good luck it worked for me it can work for anyone.

Well I only eat about 1000 calories a day, and I go to the Y everyday and run 2-3 miles. I did this last summer I never went over 1000 calories a day and I went to the Y everyday for about 1 1/2-2 months I lost 14 pounds. Last June I weighed 106 later on in August I weighed 92. I only ate healthy foods. I stopped eating beef, pork, anything friend or breaded, I cut back on dairy and I stopped drinking sodas.

You could eat it any way you liked but it wouldn't be very healthy for you if you used all your calorie intake on junk - and also keep your eye on staurated fat levels too, some things are low calorie but high fat. You have to train yourself to make good choices I guess!

You should have a look at weight watchers points sytem as you can still eat nice things but you kind of know how to limit yourself by the points you are using. They do an 'at home' diet if you dont fancy the meetings.

1200 calories is fairly low. Yes, you will lose weight, but you'll likely lose out on vitamins, minerals, and protein. Ultimately, your health, energy levels, and apparence will suffer.

I don't recommend people to drop their calories that low. Instead, I urge them to eat a sensible diet, about 1750 - 2250 calories per day, but upping their fitness level to burn about 350 - 550 calories per day. This makes them look fitter and more muscular (instead of emaciated). Plus their attitudes, energy levels, and happiness usually shoot through the roof. Weight loss is a good side effect as well.

I also urge people to eat throughout the day. A lower-calorie diet is easier to maintain if you graze / snack through the day and avoid over-feedings (i.e. avoid the all-you-can-eat buffets). You'll keep your metabolism going (digesting food burns calories) and you'll have a solid energy level throughout the day.

Use a free website such as http://www.fitday.com to monitor your activities and food intake and the weight loss will follow.

Good luck.

I once knew someone who only ate 3 mini mars bars a day cause that would mean they were under their calorie intake and they would lose weight.

They lost weight, but they gained terrible skin, hair etc.
If you want to lose weight, don't deny your body anything, even the odd chocolate bar is okay. Eat a well rounded diet.

yNo that wont work. Certain foods effect your metabolism, and is needed for the weight loss. Other foods contribute to keeping the weight on, no matter how much you eat. You can eat as much of the healthy foods as you want, and occasionaly indulge in your favorites without worry.
