This is a difficult issue, I'm afraid. The Old Testament forbids sex between men. There is a passage (Romans 1)quoted by many Christians, which apparently says that God hates same sex sex - if you can get you head around that double. However, if you read it properly, it's condemning people who are so sexually jaded that they will try anything once, so to speak.
"18The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.
24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen.
26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
28Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. "
NOTE - the bad words aren't homophobic - they are directed at the whole society. Some of the bad things are symptoms of a whole attitude.
As a Christian myself, I don't know what God thinks about same sex love. But I know he does love the lovers - whatever.
I think Christians could be more loving in their approach to those with homosexual feelings.
I think that's what makes gays and lesbians so angry and upset. Honest confusion is to be preferred. It's God who will judge people's hearts, not us!

I believe that there were passages in the Bible that directly stated that a relationship between two membrs of the same sex is not productive, or something along those lines. So, in other words, that there's no point to it since no offspring can be produced and the like.
However, I have also seen evidence that this passage does NOT outright label homosexuality as a sin. It's looked down upon, but is not seen as a direct act against God. People have just looked into it and taken the passage quite radically, either because they really believe homosexuality to be a sin or because the concept scares them and they WANT it to be wrong because they just can't accept the fact that not everything in the Bible is iron hard rule.
Either way, there are good arguements for both sides about what those passages mean. You can either say they are outright saying no, or just looking down upon the relationships.

Hi Cornflake,
Well, if you're not looking for anti-god or homophobic answer then I'll give you a logical one as to why I THINK the church discriminates against homosexual love. In my view, homosexual love is UNPRODUCTIVE and will result in end of the human race. Why do I say this? Ok, let us say, it was correct and a fruitful relationship. Let us pretend, the entire world turns homosexual as of today. Men are with men and women are with women. No-one on earth is heterosexual. In fifty years time, we wud have no children being born or even dreaming of being born again and the population of earth would be diminishing. In exactly 150 years from today, the last child born today would most definitely be dead. Welcome to the end of the human race. I don't believe that it was intended to be so. The smart animals, reptiles, birds who kept their heterosexuality would then most graciously take over the earth and the race of man is never to be seen or heard of again. I see this as a passion perhaps a severe hormonal imbalance due to the fact that we carry both male and female hormones within us. However, we should not stray away from the correct order of how things we meant to be. Boy and Girl fit together like nut and bolt, fastened together to create something productive, meaningful and a new life on earth which continues forever.

The bible says that God is love. Despite what some of the other people answered saying that there is no reference to homosexuality being sin, well they are very wrong. The bible states in several places especially in Leviticus that men lusting after their own kind is an abomination unto God. Now the bible tells you to hate the sin but love the sinner. So I don't feel that they discriminate against homosexuals they just don't look highly on the sin that they are commiting. Lastly, there is no such thing as homosexual love. It is confusion what there feeling and confusion only comes from one being and that is satan. Therefore if God is love and satan is clearly just confusion it is not really love what the homosexuals are feeling.

Because the church has it's roots in Judaism, which is a very ancient religion. In general people don't like what they don't understand, and thousands of years ago in the middle east and elsewhere people were not so enlightened. Nowadays probably the majority of people in the west don't see it as a big problem, but people also tend to be less religious, better informed and more open to accepting other people's diversity. In ancient times anything that deviated from the perceived norm was regarded as evil, and therefore rules about homosexuality worked their way into religion, so Judaism, Christianity and Islam all condemn homosexuality. People who are religious don't tend to follow biblical rules rigorously, they do pick and choose which bits to follow, but homosexuality seems to be one of those taboo things which keeps getting people uptight. There isn't any good reason for the discrimination - homosexuality just frightens people who are insecure, but I'm sure thousands of years ago it would never have occurred to most people that being gay was something they couldn't choose or that no good could come from trying to force gay people to be straight. Beats me why any gay people want to be Christian. I don't think homosexuality was quite as taboo in other cultures in Asia as it was in the monotheistic religions.

They're gluttons of ignorance and prejudice, and they pig out on Fantasizing that they know what GOD thinks about the matter when in fact bible writers revealed nothing about the subject of homosexuality. NOTHING. There is NO morally righteous reason in the real world for condemning homosexuality.
Some have relied on some silly notion that the whole human race might somehow become homosexual. It has ALWAYS been a myth that the WHOLE human race or the whole of some family, tribe, town, city, nation, etc. might somehow become homosexual and thus the beginning of the end for the human race would be set in motion. There's no basis in reality for relying on such a notion.

There are several passages in the Bible, along with a long history of tradition, which states homosexuality is an abomination and a direct affront to the will of God... which is basically what the church is there to serve when you get right down to it.
In all likelihood, the taboo against homosexuality, as with most of the sexual taboos in Judaism and Christianity, probably arose out of a situation where the Jews of the ancient world found their society constantly in jeopardy of extermination by other tribes and nations (they were often considered easy targets by other aggressive societies).
Because of that, they needed to be able to breed as quickly and successfully as possible in order to increase their chances of not being completely exterminated, which would require laws restricting sexual behavior only to those behaviors where procreation could specifically be accomplished.
Anything which decreased those chances-- for example, masturbation by decreasing sperm count for a time after the act, and "wasting" an obvious opportunity the male in question had to successfully complete a mating (if he had only found a female rather than take care of his urge solo), or homosexuality by allowing members of society to engage in non-procreative sex and non-procreative relationships-- would necessarily have to be done away with so members of society had no option but to produce offspring.
Many would argue it was also an issue of hygiene in those days, but to be frank, it probably wasn't any more hygienic for heterosexual couples to engage in sex than it was for homosexual couples, considering the standards of cleanliness and notable lack of clean water, soap, and toilet paper at the time.
So, the proscriptions probably find their basis in the desperate need of the society at that time to produce as many offspring as possible to lessen the chances of going extinct as a society.

The Bible teaches Christians to dislike homosexuality not homoxsexuals. Homosexual love is homosexuality, which is part of the act, not the person. God teaches us to love the person but dislike the act.
Since the Church believes that the Bible is the word of God (since the Bible said so itself), the Church believes everything it says.

Rom. 1:24-27: “God, in keeping with the desires of their hearts, gave them up to uncleanness, that their bodies might be dishonored among them . . . God gave them up to disgraceful sexual appetites, for both their females changed the natural use of themselves into one contrary to nature; and likewise even the males left the natural use of the female and became violently inflamed in their lust toward one another, males with males, working what is obscene and receiving in themselves the full recompense, which was due for their error.”
1 Tim. 1:9-11: “Law is promulgated, not for a righteous man, but for persons lawless and unruly, ungodly and sinners, . . . fornicators, men who lie with males, . . . and whatever other thing is in opposition to the healthful teaching according to the glorious good news of the happy God.” (Compare Leviticus 20:13.)
Jude 7: “Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities about them, after they . . . [had] gone out after flesh for unnatural use, are placed before us as a warning example by undergoing the judicial punishment of everlasting fire.” (The name Sodom has become the basis for the word “sodomy,” which usually designates a homosexual practice. Compare Genesis 19:4, 5, 24, 25.)
as one of the other poster put, homosexuality is wrong but the people are still loved by God and he wishes them to attain to repentance.

Church discriminates homosexual love because it goes against the primary instinct of mankind which is procreation.
