Faireen, are you sure about those Nixon cameras?
_|_dAnI_|_, thanks for the tip about Sony with those 'cool and sexy shapes' And here I am with a clunky looking Nikon :-(
Regina, great avatar, but you should know that Ken Rockwell is not considered a paragon of impartiality - even within the Nikon community.
Here's my take: With digital SLRs, get Canon or Nikon. All of their current models are great - from $550 for the Nikon D50 all the way to $7000 for the Canon 1DsMk2. With compact cameras the market is crowded with great stuff at every price point, but every brand also has a few duds. This makes it's impossible to claim that any one brand is head and shoulders above the rest - or even that a particular brand is always a great buy.
If you're thinking about buying but don't know where to begin, try here: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp
You can select what you're looking for in a camera (including price, zoom range, etc.) and a database will return any models that match your criteria.
That site also has full reviews for a lot of cameras. Another great site for reviews is: http://www.steves-digicams.com/hardware_reviews.html
Once you've selected the camera you want, here are 3 great sites to buy stuff (reliable, good inventory, and competitive prices):

http://www.beachcamera.com
http://www.adorama.com
Best wishes!

I think it would be quite difficult to find the best one. But it's easy to list the good ones: Nikon, Canon, Kodak.
