You could try castles and medieval stuff. It IS a little cliche, but done just right you'll get the attention
Focus on rough, tough knights with disturbed pasts (battles, persecution, etc) rather than some pompous punk prince with perfect hair and blush. The "knights" theme could project a story of betterment, vindication, honor, and fighting for what's right.
You could also write a story about personified animals... NOCTURNAL animals. Kinda like Disney-ish, but the night-time ambience provides a rarely elaborated setting for a story to develop. Plus, if it's a story for kids, it'll help them feel a little easier about the night and darkness.

If I had a Great Idea...I'd do it myself.
However, I do have some advice for you:
Develop the Story 1st!...If it's not Captivating, Informative, or at least Interesting...in purely written form...It's Not a Good Story!
Pick a subject that intrigues or fascinates You...Yourself!...maybe based upon a dream, experience, ambition, memory, interest...whatever!?...You'll be much more motivated & knowledgeable to pursue writing the story. You'll also enjoy researching material related to your story.
Your illustrations are Secondary. If you've got a Great Story...Appropriate Illustrations will definitely enhance it!

Hi, try www.canvas.ph. It's actually a non-profit children's story group where they regularly hold children's story writing contests based on a theme. To inspire the writers, they often present an original Filipino painting to serve as a theme. You dont have to join the contests, but the paintings there might inspire you.

To create one? Boy, that's going to come from a special place inside you. Find Billy Collins' Advice to Writers (a poem) for that one.
To read/share one? I love Dream by Susan V. Bosak (winner of 11 awards, with 15 incredible artists' work involved).
Good luck

get a job in a day care or preschool. Kids will let you know what they want to hear in story time.
